Gearbox Prez Lets Off Some Steam About Valve

Randy Pitchford, the man, trusts Valve, the company responsible for Steam. Randy Pitchford, the businessman and president of Gearbox Software, makers of Borderlands, may not. He calls the digital distribution service exploitative and a "money grab".

Why the harsh words? After all Gearbox and Valve have been tight in the past, with the former developing Half-Life expansions for the latter. Pitchford tells MaximumPC that, even though he loves Valve games, "There's so much conflict of interest there that it's horrid."

"It would be much better if Steam was its own business," he says. "It's actually really, really dangerous for the rest of the industry to allow Valve to win."

"I love Valve games, and I do business with the company," Pitchford notes. Borderlands is currently available for pre-sale through Steam. "But, I'm just saying, Steam isn't the answer. Steam helps us as customers, but it's also a money grab, and Valve is exploiting a lot of people in a way that's not totally fair."

Maybe Randy got up on the wrong side of the bed the morning of the interview. Maybe this is just one of his eyebrow raising "tall tales" of Valve. Maybe he's just got a game promote.

Pitchford's answer about who might be a better solution than Valve and Steam might surprise you. You can enjoy it at the full interview linked below.

I kind of understand, if it was it's own buisness venture, without a big game company controlling it, it would perhaps be more friendly to all developers.

i get what hes saying, Valve are in the games business steam is there for their games and any additoinal game they put on it are a bonus revenue which they force people to pay through the nose to distribute through.

what randy is after is a third party to come in, offer steam(or simmilar) as its own service and get competitive in pricing, distributor share and quality of service. valve can afford for steam to fail. a third party distributor could not.

Maybe he is concerned that valve will end up having a monopoly over digital distribution services or something?

We all know Valve wouldn't let Steam go to that though. But i understand a bit what Pitchford means. It's good to see people high in the business stand up and say what they feel, even if it pisses others off, it also defends others.

    so... he's shilling for microsoft?

I am happy for valve. I don't see a problem with their service. They offer games at a cheaper price then is normally available at retail in Aus.

I do understand where hes coming from, Because they do have a priority to use steam to sell their own products first, but the adoption of steam has been good imo. They seem to be getting as many games as the can onto it, and if they make a quid out of it i dont have a problem.

He's right that its a conflict of interest but without Valve making it posable it would have taken forever to get the service PC users deserve.

Valve should be able to reap the benefits of their innovation, its not like actually they wanted to do it themselves.

More trolling Richard? Do you ever stop badmouthing other companies?

Keep pissing off the gaming community, your doing an excellent job so far. The petition for gamers who refuse to purchase borderlands is growning exponentially.

Randy little do you realise if it wasn't for steam the level of PC games privacy would be dramatically higher. So before, you compare Steam to the next Microsoft monopoly think about how many sales you will lose.

I don’t want to have to see your bloody name bad mouthing another company till borderlands is released. If I do see you name be it game related or otherwise consider another copy of borderlands pirated.

Now shut up you damn dirty troll.
