Activision Not Concerned Over Modern Warfare 2 PC Complaints

On an earnings call today, Activision president Mike Griffith said his company is "not overly concerned" about gamer complaints regarding the lack of support for dedicated servers in the PC version of Modern Warfare 2.

"We're, of course, watching this very carefully and paying attention to it," he said. "But we're not overly concerned about it. One of the problems with our PC SKUs in the past is that it has not been as friendly a consumer experience in terms of matchmaking and online play as the consoles have allowed it to be. Our solution here improves that consumer experience overall by a significant margin. And so we we think that the benefits we will see are going to far outweigh any negatives that seem to be surfacing."

In a chat on the Best Buy forums this week, Infinity Ward representatives offered were short on specifics about the lack of dedicated servers, but studio veteran Mackey McCandlish did say: "Our goal is to provide the best experience for our users, so nothing is ever 'off the table'. We are always evaluating our options."

I hope for myself and others, that Activison really do know what they're doing...

They know what they're doing. They want everyone on a bloody console so they have complete control. Kotick is obviously sick of losing money on PC and wants a higher pile of cash to roll around in.

I really hope it backfires. I won't be buying any more Activision products.

"...it has not been as friendly a consumer experience in terms of matchmaking and online play as the consoles have allowed it to be."

So being thrown in a random server in a random location is better than picking from a list of servers filtered by region??

"40,000 people online!....cannot connect to server!"
      Sigh..

i dont like playing alot of games on consoles that is why i spent$600 on a new comp when COD4 graphics and my old one clashed because i couldnt up grade old one. so they need to realize that even though PC version may not make them alot of money it is still better than console versions.

They're not concerned cuz they know all their money is going to come from the consoles versions. Developers that cared would have done a u-turn by now or at least offered more than the typical "we're thinking of our consumers" BS.

"One of the problems with our PC SKUs in the past is that it has not been as friendly a consumer experience in terms of matchmaking and online play as the consoles have allowed it to be"

is this guy an idiot? the best "friendly consumer experience" that a PC gamer can have is choice on what servers they play on. this matchmaking stuff with no dedicated servers just doesn't work for PC. I really don't want to b thrown into a game full of americans and have a 300+ ping. PC gamers want dedicated severs.

And yes i really really do hope activision know what they are doing. i give it a month or so after release and we will have a patch that brings back dedicated servers for PC

no you dont understand the PC versions isnt consumer friendly because theres to much choice a sunsumer can be confused by choice. ie console diehard trys to go to a computer to play cod 6 WTF is this server browser shit what do i choose WAH

consumer friendly = the most simplified service possible 1 button to play basically

PC, you need Ruleset, Modded maps or no,location, PB or not, Players inside,

Apparently setting up the filters is too hard.

seems to be the way the world is going these days oh these people cant think for themselves

though saying all this there is still no reason we cant have both hell the MM service could work in conjunction with Dedi servers allow them all to be seen by the MM service any that have custom Mods are taken off it and then rate them by the rules enabled and the players insides average skill lvl and Ping

i can still have my dedicated server with the same people and occasionally well have the MM randoms come in and if they like what they see they can favourite it and come back through that system the next time

ITS ALL ABOUT MONEY AND CONTROL

Yup. They know the name "Modern Warfare" is a licence to print money, they don't need to do a damn thing to please the fans to make more money than a 3rd world nation. They could release the box with dog poop in it instead of a DVD and it'd still sell a bajillion copies...

"“But we’re not overly concerned about it."

We don't care. We're gonna get a shit tonne of cash anyway.

"One of the problems with our PC SKUs in the past is that it has not been as friendly a consumer experience in terms of matchmaking and online play as the consoles have allowed it to be."

So basically we're gonna do a console port.

"Our solution here improves that consumer experience overall by a significant margin."

By forcing PC users to play the game like console users.

"And so we we think that the benefits we will see are going to far outweigh any negatives that seem to be surfacing.”"

Benefits = CASH (from console owners)
Negatives = PC users boycotting the game (183K on the official petition)

"“Our goal is to provide the best experience for our users, so nothing is ever ‘off the table’. We are always evaluating our options.”"

You may interpret this as, we could patch it for the PC, but really this is a ploy to give you (false) hope.

I have till next Tuesday to figure out if I want to move my pre-order cash to something I know I'll have fun with (Star Wars Force Unleashed PC) or keep it on MW2 and hope that it's still satisfactory or, they were really right about this new MP system... *Cough* ... limited to 9v9 max players that are NOT on a dedicated server.

      183K = 183 ppl ctrl+v*1000

      Online petitions are a joke.

I can't wait to see the piracy reports for the PC verison and that I'd say around 70% will be pirated.

I know pirating is bad for developers everywhere, but I hope Activision suffers it's wrath. People need to stand up to Activision and tell them when they've gone too far. If they won't listen to the PC customers verbally, then I'm sure they'll listen financially.

Personally, I'm not buying this game, pirating it for the single player is tempting (i wouldnt be able to play MP, but at the current rate, I dont think I want too), but I'd rather not let them claim that my download justifies the giant finger they have been giving the PC community at large.
9v9 is a joke, I hold LAN parties bigger than that on a regular basis.
Does anyone know if LAN play still requires a login to IWNET? Because I'm seeing Hamachi networks being the big thing for this game if not

Why would you want to play a game thats more than likely going to be a console port for PC. Unfortunately this is the way games are going. The cash is with console players who are less demanding and requires less effort for development. This may change in 10 years when the console audience matures and has seen it all. Until then, it's franchise name 27 to exploit titles.

As I said before, all hail the new Evil Empire.

For all you people who think you are "forced" grow up.

You dont need to buy this, if your so angry dont get it, i wont.

Grow up... you know nothing do you... not every one has fast internet, and Australia core internet infrastructure is behind compared to other developed countries.

So random matchmaking isn't a good thing for Australian PC user, or PC users in generally who would rather choose what servers to play on....

I can still play CoD4 matches over Xbox Live happily on my 1.5mbps connection, no lag... No dedicated servers, either...

there is lag, trust me. you just can't see it. you have to smell it.

Jamal, although I'd generally agree with your "Don't like it, don't buy it" attitude, I think the factor that's getting to most people is that IW (who have been a big force in PC gaming since OG COD) are moving away from the l337 nature of PC gaming.
Also i doubt there will be many smooth playing 18 player servers as well. 800-1000kbps upload bandwidth isn't a great deal when it comes to hosting :(

I'm a console gamer and even I can see this is bullshit. Ever since Modern Warfare got patched and screwed everyone outside of America weve been complaining. Treyarch introduced the Region Filter to the Xbox and we were hopeful that IW would follow suit. No. They spewed out some nonsense about an "Improved Matchmaking System" . Looks like even PC's are now being given the shaft.

Infinity Ward believes that [their] solution here improves ... consumer experience overall by a significant margin.
They believe they are acting in the best interest of PC gamers.

    They are tragically mistaken.

What gets me is that they suddenly care about having a "perfect" balance.

Why not let gamers decide what they want, if it's a cramped slaughterhouse or an overly large sniper-fest?

Where did this sudden compulsion to standardise the gaming experience come from?

    "We value our community first"
    Remember that quote Infinty Ward?

Aaahhh, the indignation of it all...

There are three issues at stake I'll address them in turn...

    1. Console owners commenting here.

If you are commenting here and your only experience of on-line gaming is the extra-ordinarily limited on-line play available to you via overly controlled corporatised networks then you have no understanding whatsoever about what this actually means.

PC Gaming is about love and dedication, we devote our bandwidth to our clans, our money to our clans, and our time to our clans. We develop competition grade maps ourselves and we ask nothing in return for our love, dedication and hard work we deliver a community that dwarfs (yes dwarfs) anything that can be mustered on any other platform. Infinity ward are rewarding this community with a slap in the face.

    2. Piracy

It is self-evident that the principal logic behind this is to control piracy of the game by removing the major component of the game (multi-player) from services that are not controlled by EA. I suggest to PC gamers that if they do not wish to sponsor EA's behaviour in this matter that they should not purchase the game. Nor should you pirate it.

Pirating well lend credence to their adopted strategy this is a fact for they will view each pirated copy as a lost sale. If you want to see this developer release product for your platform then don't pirate.

    3. Like it or not (and I certainly don’t) the future is console.

IT's a fact, deal with it. The PC does not get the same degree of titles, because quite simply the financial cost of hardware is beyond the reach of many families the installed user base of gaming rigs is small compared to that of consoles and if you need proof just look at steams hardware survey. The intellectual cost (knowing what the specs actually translate to) is beyond the intellect of most families. If I'm a developer I'm going to create for a platform that has an installed user base that I know my game will work perfectly on across the whole platform without question and without compromise, the same thing can not be said of the PC which is definitely not a single consistent platform.

In summation, I for one won’t be buying this game on any format. This is not about how good it may very well be, this is about community. PC gamers are special, each one of us has made a significant investment in our hardware an investment matched by no other gamer. Our investment is matched by our commitment to community our time and our own promotion of gaming through clans which are on a scale console owners can only dream of. If you feel this community deserves to survive, then buy your software and give developers a reason to develop because quite frankly, community means nothing in the face of $$$$$$$$$.

Well they should be concerned.. the first sold so well because of its multiplayer.. Hell, I only bought mine because of pressure from friends to play online..

If they think they will be still selling MW2 at full price in 18mths time then they best hope those that do buy it initially give the MP glowing reviews..

Their 5.5hr story mode, as action packed as it may be, will only hold an audience for a couple of months at best..

"this is a fact for they will view each pirated copy as a lost sale"

Sure this is something that pirates have been trying to dispel for years, since the piracy was usually never for spite of the company. But this time we want them to see it as lost money, this time they've given us the flick and they won't get the paying customer back until they treat us right.

    hello.

im a long time gamer in the COD series and i cant actualy beleive that you think that the main percent of gamers want match making.

i cant actualy explain how enraged i am with this and near 200,000 people have signed one pettition against you absolute terrible change to an amazing COD servies.

please tell me why you want to change the game. why not look back on the income that has came through the game in the last few years over cod1 through too MW1.

i would not be supprized if this game turned into another COD3 and is whiped out from PC gaming and not put on the shelves anymore.

sort it out, this is a disgrace.

im sure i speak for most of the population when i say this.
