EA Cuts Loose Bottom Third Of Its Game Lineup

During a conference call regarding the company’s second-quarter financial results, EA’s John Schappert revealed that more than a dozen unannounced EA titles had been cut from production as part of its cost reduction plan.

Schappert called the move a “targeted cost reduction which will allow a greater investment in our hit titles and digital businesses”. The reduction in titles, which Schappert later revealed to number more than a dozen, goes hand in hand with the closing of facilities and layoffs as part of the company’s restructuring plan.

Schappert could not comment on which titles were cut, citing the difficulties inherit in announcing the cancellation of titles they had never announced in the first place. He mentioned reoccurring yearly titles, The Sims and Hasbro titles as being the company’s best-sellers, going on to say that anything that looks like it wouldn’t measure up to the profitability of those titles had been cut.

“In a way, if you could array our title slate up … we’ve cut the bottom third of it.”

  • You must remember, making games is a **business**.
Companies, like EA, need to make difficult decisions to improve profitability.

    • and these days peope boycott there entire line due to sumthing they did 3 yrs ago

EA has actually been decent in the recent past they still have the same sports stuff but dead space and NFS shift have been decent BC2 and battleforge was a decent RTS

  • Isn’t The Sims one of the best selling titles of all time?

So in order for a game to be developed by EA, it needs to sell more than any other game before it throughout the course of history?

  • Well crap. That probably means Mirror’s Edge 2 is gone. Doesn’t look like EA will have anything worth buying for me any time soon then.

    • <_< Not that big of a loss in my opinion. Mirror's Edge was so incredibly over hyped.
Sucks to hear people will be losing their jobs though, whether they make generic computer for a living or fit tyres. Unemployment is a b~tch.

      • Unemployment really is a bitch. I’ve got to personally disagree with you on the Mirror’s Edge thing though. While the game was flawed in some instances (whoever thought locking you into areas where you had to fight armed guards to progress was a good idea should be shot), I was pretty happy with it. There’s something about it that I haven’t seen anything else prior or since able to replicate. It was actually my favourite game of 2008, and there was certainly some stiff competition last year.

Besides, I found the time trial mode to be the real meat and potatoes of the game. Just you, the level, and your previous time to beat. It strips out all the crap you don’t need, and distills the experience into something pure zen.

  • hmm, Would have rather they kept the more original games as opposed to the continuously flogged sports games like Madden. Viva la Originality
