Gearbox Boss: Valve Is Behaving Like Fanboys

While not directly addressing Chet Faliszek's slap at PlayStation 3, the Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford - no stranger to stirring s—t with Valve - has taken a poke at the Left 4 Dead developer's posture toward Sony.

Pitchford, speaking to Official PlayStation Magazine, called Valve's posture toward Sony - specifically as expressed by Doug Lombardi - similar to that of fanboys'.

"Doug Lombardi had to take a swipe at the PS3 again, and I thought it was foolish," Pitchford told OPM, according to AnalogHype.

I read it the same way I read fanboys," he added. "Like there's a guy who bought the Sony platform and he's a Sony guy, so he decides he's going to spend a certain percentage of his time bashing Microsoft. And there's a guy on Microsoft doing the same thing. Those guys are childish and narrow minded; It's the same kind of thing.

Pitchford wasn't done there. He also spoke of an "underlying sleaziness" in how Valve has treated the PS3 version of The Orange Box, relative to its support for the Xbox 360 version of Team Fortress 2.

I'm actually kind of mad at Doug because with the Orange Box, he said the 360 and PC versions are the good ones and the PS3 version is like the stepchild because some other developer made it. Well you Valve don't really think that, because look what you've done on the PC side. You've supported that, you've added all this content to Team Fortress 2, and you've left us hanging. It's hard to accept that genuinely, because I know the business, I know you guys make half the money on the PS3 version because you've got other fingers in the pie, and other developers getting a cut. It benefits you if nobody buys that, and only buys the PC version, because you make the most money. There's this underlying sleaziness.

Not that this settles anything but, there you go, equal time for PS3, albeit from a surrogate, in a great three-way Valve/Gearbox/Sony pissing contest.

I honestly don't even know what to say to this. Pitchford is being a complete moron.

Agreed. A cringe-worthy expression of an opinion if you ask me.

Valve is a business. They must do what they must for the good of the company.

Pitchford needs to spend more time on his own games, and less time commenting on his competition.

He just comes off sounding like he's threatened by Valve...

He made Borderlands, he can trash talk all he wants.

        +1

Although it seems he is looking for attention by bashing Valve and others as of late. He is really just sticking up for what a lot of people believe in.

Valva is mostly a PC company. But if you're going to release a product on another system, you make the effort. And a lot of PS3 fans are pissed off and he is just voicing their opinion to make it heard.

He makes a lot of good points even if it seems disrespectful or cheap to do so. But hey, he is clearly a gamer & wants answers and changes like the rest of us on certain issues.

Perhaps he could talk a little about lack of R Rating in Australia... anyone?

Considering that a good chunk of other developers take the liking to ignoring the PC nowadays, I don't really care if the consoles get neglected every now and then. Notice I said every now and then, I do love my consoles too.

Ptciford does get off sounding like a bit of an idiot though.

He's on a power trip... he's absolutely insane.

And Boarderlands is sold on Steam so Valve is getting a cut of his pie.. He needs to STFU..

Well get past how he sounds and look at what he's saying. It's a point to be made and he's fairly right in what he says. And it's not just Valve making these 'oversights', I guess you could call them, it's other industry giants like Activision etc. What he's trying to say is; you should be trying to make games solely for the money, you should do it for the love of developing and for the love of video games. I think that's the way the rest of the industry should think. I know I do. It should be by the Gamer for the Gamer, but right now it's looking like Valve is ogling EA as a role model.

Sorry, what? Valve are the single best "for the gamer" developer EVER. They playtest their games to death to make sure it's enjoyable (compared to the "play it like we want you to or go away" from virtually every Japanese developer), they offer continued support for their products (seriously, would anyone else still be doing what they're doing with TF2?)...

Valve don't develop on the PS3 because it's too hard and they don't want to waste the effort. The effort it would take to make a game on the PS3 would probably be twice that for a PC AND 360 game put together, so there is no point in it. I see no problem in this.

Some people can't handle the power.

What a wank, they choose to ignore PS3 because its more time consuming to develop for; and I don't want hear people say "well develop for PS3 first". Because whilst i'd agree with that opinion on a console development basis; Valve develop PC first because that’s their market. Due to the Xbox being very similar to the PC its cheap and easy to cross develop a title for... THATs why they choose to develop for it without fuss, and they'd do the same for PS3 if it where within the same category. Sony shot themselves in the foot when it come to primary PC developers, because their consoles architecture isn't favorable to a PC port and requires a lot more work in distributing processing power to enable a similar experience.

I hate Pitchford as much as everyone else, but he's right about how Gabe Newell has treated the Orange Box on PS3... he comes from a Microsoft background, and it sounds to me like he has no respect for the people who own PS3s. If he was genuine about it, he would have either let Valve do the PS3 version, and do it properly, instead of outsourcing it to EA (??)... It seems like it's just a bias against Sony and the PS3. Valve should do a good job, or at least have the respect to not do it at all.

IMO it's a total cock move on Gabe's part.

And randy pitchford is acting like a fanboy on the other side of things, the one going 'why don't we have halo on the ps3?' its business, randy.

Shouldn't he be trying to fix the bugs and issues in Borderlands instead of complaining about Valve's opinions?

If Valve don't want to develop anymore for the PS3, then they don't have to.

Why? What is he going to achieve by throwing rocks at the gaming giants?

Make people clear about his game developing ethics and therefore make people fans of his studio?

His ethics are burst; hes a winge and a studio bigot. Valve isn't just a publisher anymore, they're a distribution corporation, business is key.

Plus Valve were the people that gave Gearbox their custom in the day, without Valve I highly doubt there would be Gearbox. Not the other way around.

Can we go back to before Borderlands was an upcoming release when Pitchford wasn't trying to force his way into the media every week?

ha...hahahahahahahahahaha gearbox isn't a good enough company and hasn't made a single good game of there own period. So Pitchfords words mean nothing. Besides its not valves fault the ps3 was designed shit. why should valve go out of there way to make stuff for a crappy system when they have more than enough business on a decent platform like pc.

He shouldnt trash talk the competition.

Well it appears he doesn't know much about valve

The issue steams from the fact that Valve has no PlayStation 3 developers at all, nor any plans to recruit any, which meant that the PlayStation 3 version of The Orange Box had to be ported to the platform by an internal EA studio.

Unfortunately, EA does not want to support the PS3 port any more, according to comments made by Valve co-founder Gabe Newell.

Also it sounds like randy maybe the fanboy.

"I’m actually kind of mad at Doug because with the Orange Box, he said the 360 and PC versions are the good ones and the PS3 version is like the stepchild because some other developer made it."

I wonder why people are angry at pitchford when if Lombardi actually said then that's some mega disrespect on his behalf.

I'm glad this guy brought it up. Valve's narrow-mindedness is really frustrating. They make some of the best games ever, so why are they withholding them from one of the main consoles? Oh yeah, because Microsoft lines Gabe Newwell's pockets with gold. Having never played it on the PC or the 360, I found the ps3 version of The Orange Box to be one of the best experiences I've ever had. I don't understand why it's considered to be the Step Child Version. It's a shame a company that really hasn't even tried the ps3 decides to so publically push the ps3's face (And the faces of all who support it) in the mud in such a childish manner. Grow up. Stop this Left 4 Dead nonsense and conclude Half-Life 2 in a more open minded manner.

    Wow, what an arsehole.

This guy is the one acting like an fanboy. He is deliberately stirring things up in order to gain attention, mostly from other fanboys.

Valve are a great company, with great products.

Considering how much of a poor console port borderlands is on PC, his commenting on valve neglecting the PS3 is a bit rich.

Good for him, I think hes right... don't get me wrong I wouldn't buy anything from valve for either console (I prefer my FPS with a mouse and keyboard). But Valve are getting into excuses as to why they don't do PS3.

Nah.. Valve is not a 360 fanboy.

They are PC fanboys. (And I am happy that they are). Even if they talk trash more about PS3, their action doesn't suggest that they care about 360 either. Sure, you get the port. But where's the patch? I still haven't seen Blutsauger on 360. Have you?
