Microsoft Sued Over Memory Card Crackdown

You know Datel? I like Datel, mostly because they made the Freeloader for the GameCube/Wii. Well, Datel are in the process of taking Microsoft to court over Xbox 360 memory cards.

The dispute between the two companies stems from a recent move by Microsoft to block the use of "unauthorised", third-party memory cards on their 360 consoles.

Microsoft are no doubt making the move in order to crack down on cheats, who can use expandable Datel cards (ones you can slide a MicroSD card into) to get around the 360's coding.

Datel, however, think it's just bully tactics aimed at a third-party vendor capitalising on Microsoft's exorbitant peripheral pricing. "Microsoft's purpose in disabling Datel's memory cards is to prevent consumers from choosing a Datel product that offers far better value for the price," a Datel statement reads.

"There is no benefit to consumers from Microsoft's decision to target and disable Datel's memory cards. To the contrary, Microsoft's actions will leave approximately 50,000 consumers with useless memory cards and (without the ability to access their data on the cards), forestall innovation, and deprive future consumers of the benefits of competition." About time, But is essentialy useless because Microsoft has a maverick crew of renegade lawyers who all seem to win their cases when representing Microsoft. I dont own a Xbox 360 but i know that official accessories are grossly overpriced (IMO).

I gotta agree with Datel on this one, the prices that microsoft charges for the peripherals is freaking INSANE. $149 for a wireless adaptor, $120 for a 120 gig hard drive?

Actually, make that $180 for a 120 GB Hard Drive.

      And ~ AU$70 for a 512Mb Memory Card...
I was contemplating getting a memory card to transfer Borderlands saves when I go to a friends place, but the exorbitant price just isn't worth it.

I see both sides of the story on this, but it's a total cock move on M$'s part IMO... they need to do something about the cheating, but making it so everyone who bought one can no longer use it? That has to be borderline criminal... they pretty much put them out of business... well, in terms of their Xbox 360 memory cards.

Microsoft do not make a profit from console sales. So to make up for it, they charge a high price for the extra add-ons and other stuff.

They do make profit on every console sold and have done for about two years.

Do you have any proof of that? As far as I know Xbox 360's are still sold at a loss.

Yeah this is BS, you already have to buy Microsoft specific stuff like HDMI cables and the like.

    @Clemetheus

MS HDMI cables??? no you dont

Man, Datel have it rough. they can't make ANYTHING without a lawsuit.

    Freeloader was my childhood!

It's so frustrating that MS seem to do so much right with the 360, but then they go and do so much wrong too!

The only memory card I have is an MS one, and I only got it because it came in a bundle. I've never used it.

But MS should not have stopped the sale and use of 3rd party bits, because it's really not hurting anyone, and now it just makes MS an even badder guy.

    Fail Microsoft is failsoft.

$150 bucks for a wireless adapter is insane! I paid $30ish for my PC USB plug in, and I run a cable to the 360. The Wii and PS3 both throw one in for free the least Microsoft could do is sell it for $50.

Abd the HDD's are a joke too. For $109 I can buy a 500gb Seagate SATA Laptop Drive (I'm guessing the 360 is Laptop Sata)

I suppose if you where unlucky enough to try the HDD-less route and where using a cheap Datel Card with a Big SD card in it your boned.
