Square Enix Anticipating The Death Of Consoles

Square Enix may be notorious for looking back when developing games, but when it comes to the strategy of big business, they're looking as far forward as the human eye can see.

"In ten years' time a lot of what we call ‘console games' won't exist", Square Enix boss Yoichi "Imperial Hot" Wada told MCV in an interview.

"In the past the platform was hardware, but it has switched to the network. A time will come when the hardware isn't even needed anymore."

"With that, any kind of terminal becomes a potential platform on which games can be played – that's exponential growth in the potential of gaming. The potential size of the market is enormous."

So, while you may think FFXIII is the bees knees, Square are probably more interested about the performance of FFXIV.

LOL nice to see the running gag re: his Imperial Hot'ness.

theyll still be hardware in 10yrs think of the congestion from having everyone remote accessing a respective computer to access there games it'd cause way to much congestion

Network without hardware? This guy must be dreaming... network can't come from thin air... a hardware is needed for setting up the network.

On the other hand, if all the games in 10 years time are online only, that will also be the end of SquareEnix, and none of their online games are impressive at current stage

Doubt we'll see it in ten years but we're definately approaching it, google "Cloud Computing", the idea is that you run the applications off a server via the network, it relies, obviously, on very fast networks however should (in Australia's case) the NBN actually be built, a Fibre Optic network will certainly enable it, we'll most likely see Microsoft and Sony embrace it in fact as the consoles are merely a loss leader into the home whereas they can now focus on more publishing of great games.
