Tell Us Dammit

Dammit, we want you to tell us stuff! Stuff like your favourite game of this decade.

This isn’t some marketing survey or whatever. It’s an emotional investment in you. Yes, we’re interesting in knowing you, Kotaku reader person. You probably know fucktons about us — more than you even want to, we’re sure. But, hey, we’d like to know about you, too.

Anyway, here’s today’s question…

We're nearing the end of the first decade of the 21st century. Expect to see sites and publications everywhere running their "Best of the 00s" lists very, very soon. But what would be on yours? What is your favourite game of 2000-2009?

Me? I can't choose just one, so I'll let you off the hook, too. I'd put Silent Hill 2, Shadow of the Colossus, Metroid Prime, Psychonauts, Far Cry 2, Portal, GTA III, Thief: Deadly Shadows and... probably Mashed, actually, on my shortlist. Hmm, maybe I'll have to think about it some more and do my own list in a few weeks. You?

Hitman: Blood Money, after going a steady improvement in quality throughout the series they finally hit a gold. It got the balance right in being an accurate and somewhat realistic assassin sim, a heart pounding stealth game and tone that was dark yet fun. The storyline was also fantastic, the best ending level I have played in ages, the level pacing was also great steadily increasing in difficulty and maintaining variety. The between level stuff (ratings, upgrades, news etc.) was use full and added some extra incentive to replay the game. I only hope with Hitman 5 that they can build on their success.

Call of Duty 4 and Puzzle Quest.

Two games that took that RPG experience and craftingly, lovingly glued it into something magical.

Way too many good games to choose from to just pick a single winner. So here's my list...

Red Alert 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein/Enemy Territory, Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, C&C Renegade, Super Mario Galaxy, LoZ Twilight Princess, GTA: Vice City, Doom 3, POP: Sands of Time, Company of Heroes

I'm sure I am forgetting a few favourites here as well.

    Kane and Lynch: Dead men

      Really?

      I heard that was terrible!

      Care to explain?

The more I think about this the longer my list gets!

Red Alert 2, Supreme Commander, Pro Evo 9, the entire Orange Box, GTR2, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Psychonauts, Neverwinter Nights, and even though I haven't touched it in over two years, World of Warcraft.

    Turning Point: Fall of Liberty.

hmmmmm Demon's Souls would most def feature somewhere in my top few, that would be my darkhorse. It's such a unique game.

WoW - it topped the game of the year charts in a clean sweep on release, and by the end of 2010 will have 3 expansions, be celebrating its 5 year anaversery and maybe a movie release.

its had a massive cultural effect, your mother is as likely to raid as you are, Looking For Group, now an award winning epic fantasy comic started as a WoW parody comic.

we forget because we dont reminise about WoW, its still here, people are still playing it

    Gears 1.

Have to agree with David, Mashed is just about my favourite game of this decade and the only reason I wish my PS3 was backwards compatible. I wasted many hilarious hours racing around Polar Ice with 3 mates. Simple game, fantastic to play.

    Other favourites include:
Uncharted 1 and 2, Warhawk, Mario Kart DS, Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, Call of Duty 4, We Love Katamari, Portal, Rock Band.

Sure i'm forgetting a few gems, but that'll do.

    Runner Up.
Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2 - Accomplished action adventure, with an inspired weird setting.

    Best of 00-09
Mount & Blade - Proving that it doesn't take a huge development team and millions of dollars to make a game that's deep, has intense gameplay and keeps you coming back again and again.
    This game is teh awezum!

Mount & Blade? More like Mount & LAME!!! BAHZING!!! Gimme Lugaru over Medieval garbage anyday. Also you've misspelled awesome... Just letting you know...

Deus Ex 1 for me. Still creeps into the last decade (just).

Right behind that would be most of the games released by Bioware and Bethesda - Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and possibly Dragon Age but no where near finishing that one yet. :P

Credit should also go to Gearbox and their Brothers In Arms games for easy controls for squad command and story elements.

Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis, x3, Battlefield 2, Supreme Commander,

Id have to agree with Ryno - WoW would easily be the game I have sunk the most time into, and from a business perspective its easily the most successful. So even though ive moved on from WoW onto greener pastures where you have wings! It would easily be my pick for 1st place.

    Shadow of the Colossus
    Far Cry 2
    Assassins Creed 1 and 2
Prince of Persia Sands of Time

and of Course Battlefield 2142 for bringing me into online gaming and further more my clan. (As for best engine this decade either Anvil or Frostbite)

    bioshock!!

Cheated a little by looking at other lists for reminders, but:

Deus Ex, NWN, Crysis, BioShock (those two coz I had just built my first new machine in about a decade and they showed it off beautifully), Portal (awesome concept, awesome ending :), GTA:SA - they're the best I can think of right now. Oh, and seeing as almost everyone else is going for just commercial titles and not indies (Mount & Blade being the only one I recognise), I'm putting Spelunky and Cave Story in too.

    1) GTA Vice City
    2) Fallout 3

No other games have I invested as much time into in my life.

elder scrolls 3, gta 3, halo: combat evolved.

    Mech Warrior 4

But part of that love could be for the people at MekTek who keep offering expansions.

Bioshock. Call of Duty 4. Halo. KOTOR. Super Smash Bros Brawl. Fallout 3. Portal. Megaman Battle Network. Golden Sun. Psychonauts. Mashed.

I need to play more games.
