Europe: Army Of Two Was "Ridiculous, Tasteless"

EA Montreal are currently at work on an Army of Two sequel, and as part of that work, have been looking at what was wrong with the first game. Like how Europeans hated it.

"We had this whole market in the US that thought the tone was cool, but in Europe everyone thought it was ridiculous and tasteless and a bunch of frat guys running around", EA Montreal's Reid Schneider told

Their solution? Let players tailor the tone of the sequel to the way they're playing it. "One of the things we learned was that we're never going to be able to please both. So the way you interact with your partner and decisions you make – if you're doing a lot of fist bumps – these influence the tone and the dialogue of your character. If your taking it on a more serious level then the game reacts seriously."

As neither an American nor a European, I feel I'm qualified to say that if you're skimping on the fist bumps, you're missing the point.

    I always said that that game was made by people who loved Team America World Police but didn't realise it was a joke

      I think that sums up the entire tone and premise of the game. Although it doesn't quite convey the subtle homoerotic undertones, or was it just me that got that from the game?

    Agreed. While parts of the game mechanics were interesting, the overall feeling of responsibility (or lack thereof) within the game really disappointed me. It left a similar aftertaste as Gears of War 2 - like a $1.50 cheeseburger... cheap and nasty.

    Err, wasn't that the intention? They made a game absolutely 100% marketed at the frat boy Xbox crowd then were surprised that only frat boys liked it?

      I guess they're saying that market is a lot smaller in europe than it is in the US.

      From what i understand the game sold well and was generally well recieved by its target audience.

      I guess they're just trying to broaden the target audience to something.... in... oh I don't know... Modern Warfare 2's range, which appeals to frat boys and more serious combat simulator fans alike.

    This is also an example of people not researching the product they are buying. If you saw any of the trailers for army of two the you would know what kind of game it was.

      Yeah, a generic FPS game where the homosexual theme is really flamin'.

        I'd hardly call army of two generic, the co-op in it was absolutly brilliant and deffintly, if not a complete inovation since it was building on gears of war, a massive evolution of the concept. Hell I don't think I've ever seen a shooter (barring left 4 dead) so focused on co-op.

    I loved the game, personally. It was fun, and didn't take itself too seriously. It was almost a Scary Movie-style parody of frat boys.
