Fat Princess Gets Fifth Finger, Release Date For Japan

After suffering a short delay, it appears that PlayStation Network game Fat Princess will be released in Japan on Christmas Day. And the reason for that delay? Previous speculation about a lack of fingers may have been accurate.

In newly released artwork for the PlayStation 3 game, the Fat Princess cast is now playing with a full hand, each class sporting five fingers instead of the previous four.

A lack of fingers? Really? Japan wouldn't let in a game because the characters only had four fingers?

The Simpsons must not be very popular over there either.

The whole 'missing digits' issue spurns from the fact that Yakuza members will remove a finger and gift it to their boss as penance or as an apology. The reason behind this is that it makes the usage of a sword harder with each missing finger, which is supposed to indicate that the particular member has to rely more on the group for protection, limiting their individual actions. Which is really neither here nor there.

The point is, a character not having 5 fingers on each hand can be an indication of some tie to the Yakuza in Japan. Seeing as the Yakuza are supposedly pretty nasty dudes, avoiding the potential ties to them (however tenuous/non-existant) is generally a good idea.

I honestly do not know what to say to that. Maybe... Maybe they thought she ate her fifth finger?

      Hahaha.

wow, i think i found out why by accident, because the four finger thing happened to Abe's Oddysee as well (thank you Wikipedia).

"The design for the protagonist Abe and other Mudokons was also significantly altered. Certain Japanese pressure groups were offended by the Mudokons having four fingers, due to a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burakumin"historic Japanese subclass of meat packers who were looked down upon in society. Four fingers, or showing four fingers to another person, came to insinuate the other was a member of the subclass, because it had become symbolic of the meat packers who frequently had work-related accidents. Oddworld Inhabitants had to alter the design of Mudokons to having only three fingers, or else face legal battles and large fines."

now as this comes from Wikipedia I would advise taking it with a grain of salt, but it looks it may still be potentially offensive in Japan.

    Japan must hate deformities.
