Left 4 Dead 2 Sells 2 Million In 2 Weeks

Despite early concerns that it was too soon for a sequel, Left 4 Dead 2 has sold more than 2 million copies at retail, doubling the sales to date of the original game.

Gamers made noise when the sequel to last year's cooperative survival horror title was announced earlier this year, but the quick follow-up doesn't seem to have hurt Left 4 Dead 2's sales figures. More than 2 million copies of the PC and Xbox 360 versions have sold at retail, a figure that doesn't even take Steam purchases into account. That's great news for Valve, who in turn have more great news on the way.

"Left 4 Dead 2 is off to a great start with strong support at retail and great reviews from the press," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Meanwhile the title has already been played by over 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold account holders, and news regarding L4D2 DLC 1 is coming very soon."

I'd urge our readers to keep their eyes on Kotaku for said DLC news, but that's no way to survive the zombie apocalypse.

is that in australia? those poor souls... how can they not know about the l4d2 boycott...i will never buy the aussie version, import only for me.

yer thats in australia, 10% of the population bought it(!).

the problem with the boycott is it is harming the wrong people. it doesn't really get the message across to people who would prefer the game wasn't released at all. they already don't give a [email protected] about the gaming industry and the dollars it brings to the country or even the dollars that stay in the country. they care about society. as they can't measure the imports, the local sales being low equals a win for them.

personally i think MW2 should have gotten banned but l4d2 not. MW2 should never have had the airport level to start with, the review board has made itself look incompetent and inconsistant.

I'd be interested in seeing the sales numbers for Australia. I don't know anybody who is boycotting it but nobody seems very keen to buy it.

Anyone who is buying it is importing it (myself included). I don't know a single person with the Australian version. Based on that in-depth analysis, not a single copy has been sold in Australia.

Those of us who did buy it on PC are all using the 510 worksround to play unedited..

Why punish Valve for our retarded classification system and fucksticks like Atkinson..

Still waiting for my copy to arrive in the mail. Its times like this that you hate the postal service.

I know tons of people who bought it for the PC, we just had our overseas friends gift us uncensored copies.

    Worked a treat.

I just bought it on Steam and used a workaround. It's definitely more satisfying with the violence intact.

A friend of mine who works at a certain large Australian Games retailer said everyone who has bought Left 4 Dead 2 so far has returned it.

I sure wish I hadn't bought the Aussie version...

As to why I did, I bought it on impulse during the 5 day sale figuring I could just use the workaround, without realising I'd be crippling the available pool of online players... over 10,000 online to under 200. Ouch. Only 1 or 2 campaign game lobbies to be found, and not much joy getting onto custom 510 servers yet.

Steam support wouldn't refund me either because I got the version I was supposed to receive, even though I wasn't happy with it. Not saying that's their fault of course, but geez, it would've been nice. Having played the demo probably didn't help my case.

Buyer beware, don't repeat my mistake and get this imported or gifted!

I'm pretty much already bored with L4D2, I havn't played VS yet but I don't have a want too. Scavenge was fun but it does get boring. Waiting for DLC.

is it just me or is the whole no riot cop thing wrong?
im rocking the aus version after i receved it as a gift and im killen armord cops left right and center.

IT *is* Valve's fault they gimped the Australian version as much as they did. Disappearing corpses? Zombies that are magically impervious to fire? All they had to adjust was the melee gore and it would essentially be the same level of violence as L4D1.

wow im surprised, i didnt expect this many sales, i played the early demo and got a refund.
