Microsoft: Black Friday Gives Xbox "Biggest Sales Week" Of Year

Get ready to for some corporate gloating, Microsoft-style, in the coming days. According to the company's Director of Product Management for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, the Xbox 360 just had its "biggest sales week of the year."

Greenberg didn't put a specific figure to the console's sales from the Thanksgiving/Black Friday week as Nintendo did earlier today. But the increasingly svelte Xbox 360 spokesman did write that last week's numbers were "more than [two times the]previous week sales."

We'll see if Microsoft can top 2008, when the Xbox 360 maker claimed it outsold its PlayStation 3 competition three-to-one.

What is this "Black Friday" stuff? I always hear about it and from what I can gather its a big clearance sale, but I don't get why they do it?

According to Wikipedia, it seems to have several possible derivations. I like the one about it being the day when retailers transition from loss to profit.

Black Friday is the Friday following Thanksgiving Day in the United States, which is the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season.
This is followed by Cyper Monday where they generally see a huge increase in online purchases on the Monday.

Its very odd and it was amusing when I was in Hawaii last week. Some excellent sales to be had especially with the dollar :-)

VGChartz shows 360 sold 285000 the week ending 21/11.

think of it similar to our Boxing Day sales, except it's a month before christmas, where most people use it to get their christmas presents... my parents are coming home from hawaii tomorrow, and they're bringing back a laptop they got from a best buy store for $198 USD
