Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC)

An outlandish story. Lots of shooting. Lots of explosions. What is war good for? And another question: Is the 'game of the decade' any good?

Loved

Soap On A Rope: The campaign is a thrillride, a plot twist here, another one there. Excellent voice acting and plenty of details makes the campaign a good ride... while it lasts. Intel pulls you back again, but no bonus is a little saddening.

63 Stars...Alone: The Spec Ops mode, when you're alone, is actually quite fun, with a good few challenges here and there in order to keep you playing. Going through All Ghillied Up again was fun by myself.

Multiplayer...Sometimes: When the multiplayer didn't lag or disconnect me for apparently no reason, it was 'fun' - seemed balanced enough, even though I lost nearly every game I played.

Hated

Let's Nuke Washington! While CoD4's story was actually possible, CoD:MW2 throws it out the window, replacing reality with a nuke here and a Russian invasion of Washington there. One of the main things I liked about CoD4 was it could ACTUALLY HAPPEN.

SpecOp CoOp: My one and only co-op experience with Spec Ops with a companion alongside me ended with me ending the game 30 seconds in with a framerate lower than 5 fps. You will need a good connection in order to play Co-Op.

Multiplayer...Rest Of The Time: When I wasn't getting a good game out of the multiplayer, I was being dropped out of the games, extreme lag issues and with the lack of dedicated servers or a location filter, I'm not too happy with the experience.

Game of the Decade? Hardly. Game of the Year? Possible. Fix the laggy Multiplayer experience, and I'll consider this again. Otherwise, it's just another day, another war game.

does this bloke have dial up or something?

It's called living in Australia, and a lot of the time, you'll find yourself connected to a server in another country.

ok i cant believe im defending Cod but i think that the problem with spec ops lies with one of your computers not the internet since i was playing it while i had my speed reduced to 64kbps

the problem with spec ops is no tct chat in PC why i dont know

as for russia not being able to invade washington how is this not possible, if you followed what little story there was russia had obtained the ACS(basically there early detection system) and hacked it so they could hide there approach until it was already to late

once there in america, they cant just shoot them out of the water like they would if they had been detected earlier

the nuke thing was stupid tho as was the space station

balance is broken 90% chance your gonna see everyone running around with dual shottys

The balance is perfect actually. Ive been playing this online since the day it came out and sure enough everyone is using different weapon combos etc.

Dual shotguns? unless you are within a meter or 2 from an enemy you will be shot in the face with little to no effort.

I'm finding it horribly unbalanced, laggy, and fucking irritating.

Great review and cant agree more.
They really let us down with the multiplayer issues.

Reminds me of the Gears of War 2 experience to be honest... great game, great story, p!$$ poor multiplayer performance!!

    Well done Ben

    There is a bonus level.

Go into the museum and hit the fire alarm.

    It's marked with
"Do NOT activate the fire alarm!"

Yea, like that warning ever works.....

Not really a fire alarm. All I got was 'DO NOT Press E'.

      I did.

      I died.

Which platform did you review on?

    This is.. a bad review.

i agree with most of the review,

single player campaign was really awesome (didnt care about being over the top story, it is a game!) but it was way wayyy too short. single player spec ops is even quite fun.

Multiplayer is really really crap even on my adsl2 good connection. (looks boring anyway) Every other multiplayer game i play has a great connection speed, just not cod mw2. Multiplayer is a big backward step from cod4.
If it brought back lan and/or dedicated server, at least for the spec ops, it would be alot better. Spec ops looks designed for a small lan. I would be happy for a lan listen server setup.

so some big highs, and some bigs lows. Overall 'just good enough' with a bag of frustration.

That guy WON something for this horrid review?

Sorry! but my Bigpond internet was CAPPED to 64kb all of last week and CODMW2 still ran perfect framerate etc on XBOX LIVE...

Whether its game of the year or not, this is an unfair review; i literally just finished playing online less than 5mins ago and it was perfect playing with people mostly in the US. Also my 10 or so friends who are playing this online at the moment have no problems either.

And if it runs differently on PC well then your "review" is only for the PC platform not all 3! Bad Review!

Well you're just the luckiest little boy in all of texas, because you're about the only one - the ONLY one - I've come across playing here in Australia who hasn't experienced crippling lag. Cherish these moments, Kyle Nash. They're special, special, special moments.

        What platform?

I'm Australian, my connection is average (often slow when browsing on the Internet) and yet I extremely rarely get lag when I play over XBL (and 100% of the time it either resolves within a few seconds or we're sent back to the lobby due to the server).

To the guys that said is this guy completely wrong, think about it. Not everyone has freaking cable or fibre-optic internet where you're from so that downs that argument. Secondly, IW.net is completely useless at multiplayer match-up. When I played, I was paired up with guys that had obviously farmed the bejesus out of it and completely owned me. Who thought that having n00bs and as well as pros/farm jumpers would spec up right? It's like trying to teach a baby to talk whilst you're driving a race car when you're on the phone. I can understand from other multiplayer games such as TF2 or COD4 at least but this is absolute BS.

I agree with the review though. Great single player, great story and epic action. Pity that multiplayer was shafted so badly.

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for your review, but I have to take issue on your experience with multiplayer. I have been since close to this games' release on PS3 and in multiplayer mode I have never experienced any lag. In fact, in most multiplayer matches I see that my ping is at 1 bar (in red) and everyone else is full bars (in green) but I still never get an lag or glitching and I play competitively all the time.

    I think that in reviewing a game you shouldn't quote your own experience of lag and glitches and delays without quantifying them with details like;

    - Platform
    - Internet connection speed
    - you get the gist

Basically, I play on a 1500kb connection with my PS3 connected to the netword wirelessly, and I have never experiences lag!

For anyone considering buying this game I would emphasise that it is mainly designed as an online multiplayer. The single player is limited and should only be an intro to the physics and controls.

If you are a casual gamer, maybe consider something else. If you are a hardcore gamer, this is your ticket.

If you are like myself, a hardcore gamer turned casual; ie, hardcore gamer at heart but have a job and family and can only play once your kids go to bed, this is still a RAD game!

I'm playing this one to my hearts content!

    Cheers guys,

    Piers

      Hi Ben,

Thanks for your review, but I have to take issue on your experience with multiplayer. I have been since close to this games’ release on PS3 and in multiplayer mode I have never experienced any lag. In fact, in most multiplayer matches I see that my ping is at 1 bar (in red) and everyone else is full bars (in green) but I still never get an lag or glitching and I play competitively all the time.

-The ping system is actually horibble - it doesn't give an accurate representation.

      I think that in reviewing a game you shouldn’t quote your own experience of lag and glitches and delays without quantifying them with details like;

      - Platform
      - Internet connection speed
      - you get the gist

Basically, I play on a 1500kb connection with my PS3 connected to the netword wirelessly, and I have never experiences lag!

      - I have a PC over the requirements of the game, my broadband though is horrible, even though it's at 1500kbs, it's terrible.

For anyone considering buying this game I would emphasise that it is mainly designed as an online multiplayer. The single player is limited and should only be an intro to the physics and controls.

      - As is nearly every other FPS game on the market today?

      Anyway, thanks for the advice.

Kind of thinking you console guys should maybe lay off. You say its not laggy but why is that exactly? You don't know any better. We PC gamers do, I played COD4 tonight for the first time since MW2 came out and was blown away by how tight the gameplay was, how sharp it was. And its not the only game I did this with tonight, L4D! I played that for the first time since L4D2 and exactly the same reaction except not based on lag this time, but actual gameplay and balancing. And most importantly not holding the hands of lesser teams with this pathetic new scoring system.

I think this review was fair, I run cable which usually nets me lower pings than anyone else I play with and yet even when I have near enough to full ping bars (on the 10 bar graph not the 4 bar) it is light years from the same sharpness I can get just going back to COD4 and playing on a dedicated server.

You guys comparing FPS lag to network problems are saying this guy doesn't know what hes talking about? And yet you think lag makes your FPS drop?

At least he called a spade a spade. I had the exact same experience and stopped playing MW2 less than a week after it came out. This sort of thing might appeal to you console gamers but to me MW2 is like what Counter-Strike would be if it had a love child with Team Fortress 2.

Fischer Price game. No sharp edges.

I miss having skill rewarded. It just seems to fade away as time goes by and all my PC games become more and more direct ports of console games.

Oh get off your high horse there Sir l337 PC gamer! I am a PC Gamer too and yes i do 'know better'. Lag is lag and if there is no lag experience on console compared to your high and mighty PC then you know why i have the game on XBOX360 instead of my PC, which yes, does have high enough specs to run COD on full settings.

"You don’t know any better. We PC gamers do" What a ridiculous statement. As a lifelong PC gamer im apauled by your arrogance.

Couldn't agree more with the review. The 'action' was beyond ridiculous, storyline was so dumb it makes Matt O'Reilly look like a documentary writer and it was all over in 6 hours.

In the 6 hours of SP, there was one section that was actually quiet brilliant. It's the mission where you rappel down the side of a cliff, and stab some irrelevant dude in the chest. As he slips into death, he stares straight down the TV screen into your soul. How on earth IW are capable of such dramatic gameplay for those 5 seconds in amongst the other stupid stuff is beyond me. Those 5 second run contrary to every other moment of CODMW2; they are the polar opposite of every other death in the game.

No Russian? Struth, I don't even know where to start on the stupidity of that entire level.

MP is a blast (pun intended), but whoopdedo for a $100 MP expansion pack, especially one that is marred with basic technical difficulties.

Multiplayer has its ups and downs.

My first complaint would be that I only got the game on Thursday that just passed and already im being matched against people much higher leveled than me.

It is seriously unfair when the high level players have all the upgrades and can literally run through the map sneaking up on ppl and cut them down with one knife slash.

i'm fine with not playing this game the day of release and so everyone is much stronger than me, but seriously have some level caps so people can play against others of similar skill level.

the other would be how your online and offline setups are separated. its annoying knowing that when i will play against some friends locally, i'll have to start all over with the crappy setups.

Who are these people who reckon they get a lag-free experience playing in US-hosted games with one bar connections?

    One bar means lag.

I'd like to clear a few things up now:

    - My PC is a Intel Core 2 Duo with 2ghz. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4300 with 512mb. Along with my 2GB of RAM, I'm over the limit, so I shouldn't have many problems.

    - HOWEVER - my internet is a 3G broadband modem that is with Optus that has had to be repaired twice. While I have not noticed the NETWORK going down, the connection is truly horrible to play with.

    - During my short experience with Spec Ops, it reminded me of my time with GTA2's multiplayer - the FPS would drop if the game couldn't stay in sync due to the connection. I assume it's the same in MW2.

    - This review was done for the PC version of MW2. Probably should note that.

    - Multiplayer is unbalanced as all hell, now that I can say it outside the word limit.

    - If you just say, "That is a...bad review", please tell me what's wrong. Please.

then it should only say PC in the review title not all 3 consoles then there would be no problem. My brother has it on PC and its horrible online, while i have it on 360 and its perfect.

Yeah, all three's there because I forgot to list the platform in the email. Oops.

No worries, Ben, all cleared up now.
