Report: Modern Warfare 2 PC U.S. Retail Sales About 170,000 In November

Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had a monstrous November, moving more than 6 million copies in the U.S. on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The retail PC version also contributed, but to a less impressive degree.

According to a new report from Gamasutra on last month's NPD figures, the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 moved "nearly 170,000" copies at retail. That doesn't include figures for Steam, Valve's digital distribution system, which are likely to have been significant—today, over 100,000 Steam users were playing the game online at the same time, but we're not sure how that breaks down to retail and online sales.

Still, at least 170,000 copies to a group of gamers that balked at the lack of dedicated servers and a higher-than normal price tag is.... pretty good?

I'd say thats about half of those that were originally going to get it.

That said, it'll probably have a longer tail on PC as a lot of those people get bored waiting for BF they'll pick it up the first time steam has a sale on the game.

Not in Australia the steam price is BS.

Yeah and its just activision setting that stupid steam price. COD4 is still really high priced. At least EA understand digital distribution an put Dragon Age up for $50 US on the aussie steam. $88 US for COD MW2 is stupid.

theres enough games coming out over the next couple of months to tide you over till BC2 but regardless of that its not like Cod 4 is dead they can still play a balanced game that isnt full of the 100,000 noobs that didnt know about the no dedicated servers and just run around akimbo shotguns

Did it continue to outsell CoD4 compared to its release? Still pretty poor sales for such a high-profile title. Probably explains why they made a half-arsed effort on the port.

Maybe if they didn't retail it for $89.95 USD in for australians in the steam store, more would have bought it here in the land down under.

Hey guys, who else hates modern warfare 2?

It is so unbalanced. As soon as people unlocked akimbo 1887's the game became instantly terrible. I can understand that they'd be OP, but only a tad on console where aiming is harder, but on PC you can use them from a decent distance and still pwn. Lack of dedi's still hurts, and the game is just not FUN. Compelling, but not fun. It saddens me that this will become the norm.

The saddest thing is 99% of the community hasn't noticed yet.

I was annoyed at the lack of dedicated servers but I was still considering getting it until I saw the steam price. I'm still yet to own a copy and don't plan to any time soon. Plenty of other great games out there to play.

100000 steam users were playing well considering everyone uses steam its kinda of a stupid comment

170000 explains why MM is so terrible 170 accross the whole planet well thats downright terrible
