Transformers: The War For Cybertron Puts Autobots In Gears

Activision has an all-new Transformers game on its slate for next year, one that looks like it will be taking gameplay cues from Gears of War.

According to the newest issue of Game Informer, Transformers: The War for Cybertron is a third-person shooter that chronicles the Autobots' battle waged against the evil forces of the Decepticons. And vice versa, as early reports from subscribers and serious Transformers fans indicate we'll play as both robotic factions.

The game is said to be in development at High Moon Studios, developers of Darkwatch and The Bourne Conspiracy, and due for a 2010 release.

Transformers: The War for Cybertron apparently falls outside various Transformers continuities with a look that's less blocky than the Generation One style of 'bot, but not as visually offensive as the Michael Bay version of the classic Takara toy.

Wait. I'm confused. People keep saying "Gears of War" style gameplay, which to me means cover heavy combat, but in this context it seems to be referring to third-person control. Unless they're going for the other signature Gears aspect, brutal violence and pointless swearing that makes the characters appear both lovable and brain-dead.

I believe nowadays that saying "it's like gears" means it's off-centre over-the-shoulder third gritty third-person-shooter. Even though there were many games that did this before gears, with gears only pioneering a cover system and action camera to make it more intense.

People should only compare transformers games to transforming mech titles like gunmetal and macross. As far as I know that's the only way they would work.
