2009’s Most Popular Xbox Live Titles… In Australia

So we know what the most popular Xbox Live titles for 2009 were worldwide. But what about the most popular in Australia (and New Zealand)? Just how different are our tastes?

Turns out we’re not very different at all. The top six most played games in Australia (based on the number of unique users) is identical to the worldwide list. It’s only at the lower end of the chart that we express our love for ODST and Fallout 3 over the rest of the globe’s preference for Left 4 Dead and Resident Evil 5.

Top 10 Most Played Retail Games
1. Halo 3
2. Call of Duty 4
3. Modern Warfare 2
4. Call of Duty: World at War
5. Gears of War 2
6. Grand Theft Auto IV
7. Halo 3: ODST
8. Fable 2
9. Guitar Hero World Tour
10. Fallout 3

On the XBLA front, we’re united behind Battlefield 1943, Trials HD, Castle Crashers and Shadow Complex. However, we sure do love our Worms more than the rest of the world. Also, Monkey Island makes our top ten.

Unlike Major Nelson’s blog, which listed the most played Xbox Originals, Indie Games and Games for Windows titles, Australia’s Xbox blog InsiderX instead gives us our most played XBLA games, our most purchased avatar items and most rented movies.

I’m guessing Hexic HD still comes pre-installed on the hard drive of every new console. And you really are all Star Wars nerds deep down, aren’t you?

2009’s Top 10 Roundup [InsiderX]

  • Out of the top 10 games, I played 8. Not a Guitar Hero fan nor really interested in Fable.

Didn’t play a lot of arcade games (bar 1943 and Shadow Complex). Does it count if I play Peggle on my phone?

When it comes to avatar items, I’m still bemused why people pay for them. Some of them could’ve netted some Arcade or DLC items at the Christmas half price sales, but hey that’s up to them.

Lastly onto movies on demand. I had a browse through that a couple of days ago and there really is very very little content. Out of that there’s very little that you’d pay money to rent (it would imply you haven’t seen it before). Is there any news on when more content will be added to it? I really like the idea of streaming movies but the range is obscenely poor.

  • Hahaha, I think I contributed to Fallout still being up there… I was busting my balls to play it again for a long time, I’ve clocked up about 75 hours in the game since I got the GOTY edition in late October…

    • I got 310 hours!!! fav game ever!! completed 100% that uncludes every possible side quest!! btw cant remember the name of it but has anyone done the quest where you gota pretect the miny ants? when i stubbled upon that i was highly amused!

  • It is so comforting to see a top ten sales list than I can relate too. I guess restricting the content to the only console I own makes a difference. I guess this is a little what the top 10 lists would look like without the Nintendo Wii first party titles clouting the numbers.

I’ve actually finished 5 of the top 10 and own but are yet to finish another.

I’ve also played over half the XBLA titles and own and really enjoyed three of the top four.

Avatar clothes aren’t really my thing, I like the idea but can’t justify the cost. Enjoy a few of the unlocked reward items and would make an exception if they released AFL team guernseys.

I’ve seen many of the movies and enjoyed them but used other means or the cinema to view them.

  • I contributed too Geo Wars and Hexic HD. First games I played when I got my new Arcade. Geo Wars is still fun as ever and Hexic is a good relaxing game to play when you dont fell like playing a retail game.
