A First Look At NBA Jam For The Wii

EA Sports gave an exclusive first look at NBA Jam to Nintendo Power, and judging by a scan that's circled the earth about three times now, a zany visual style should accompany its boom-shakalaka gameplay.

That image above was first circulated by Go Nintendo. As you can see, it looks like the players will have 3D bodies and 2D heads, (think Monty Python, or the cutscene animations in Mythbusters.) According to a reader on NeoGAF, "The faces are actual photograph captures, each character has multiple faces, three faces while running the court, two dunk faces, and a positive and negative face." Sounds delightful. In fact, it wasn't that far off from Ripten's artist's conception published when the game was announced earlier this week.

For those curious about how the game will be controlled, NBA Jam will support motion control; players may also control it holding the Wiimote sideways to use the D-pad and buttons. No mention was made of the Classic Controller.

Of course, the power-ups and unlockables are what made NBA Jam such a raucous hit, and the Nintendo Power article listed these: Fire; Shattering Backboard; Cheats; Flashing Shoes; Flashing ball; Big Head Mode; Legends; Playable Mascots; Secret Characters.

Big Head mode, combined with these graphics, sounds like a riot. The secret characters were a show-stealer on the original, but they came before everyone got super uptight about licensing and use of likenesses in games. I have to wonder who they've brought in.

Looks like they've updated the visuals a bit.

I'm only hoping for two things
    1) That they include the original as well as the updated version and
2)That this comes out for the 360 and PS3 as well.

My NBA Jam story: a mate had its for SNES, but it was a US version, so he also had the converter. We borrowed it for a weekend and the SNES was one for about 30-odd hours straight while we completed a season (we couldnt overwrite my friends file). Chicago Bulls of course. To this day I have never been as terrified as I was of the Power Unit blowing up due to NBA Jam. I would be the 3pt king, while I made my brother stay under the basket to pick up the fallout if I missed. To this day I will yell "He's on FI-YERRRRRR!" when on a killstreak on FPS or a sweet run on sports game. Fantabulous. Still dont care for RL b-ball tho, despite loving White Men Cant Jump lol.

      LOVES this story.

The game looks ace and right on the money of what the original was like

If Charles Barkley and/or Scottie Pippen aren't included as legends I'll be shattered.

AND hopefully the CPU assistance won't be such a bitch this time around (and it most likely will be as it added to the charm of the original).

I want the original snes or arcade version either on the disc (playable without having to unlock it) or on vc please!

And I want to use my darn classic controllers!

I remember first playing NBA Jam down at the arcade in Caville Ave on the Gold Coast on a screen about 3-4 times the size of normal arcade cabinets. I fell in love with it and got it for my Sega Mega Drive when it came out on consoles. I Still have that Sega Megadrive version of the original, gets a play probably once a year - I sure hope this new one is as fun as the original!

This could seriously make me buy another Wii. I traded my last one...but this does look promising. Boomshackalacka!
