By 2011, You Will Be Sick Of Nolan North

Don't know who Nolan North is? Play Uncharted. Or Prince of Persia. Or Halo Wars, Lost Planet, or Assassin's Creed. He's without a doubt the most recognisable voice actor in video games today, and in 2010, he will be busy.

In an interview with Gamepro, North says 2010 "is gonna be a busy year", with work to be done on not only new Uncharted and Assassin's Creed games (he plays the heroes Nathan Drake and Desmond Miles, respectively), but "a couple of other big premieres that are still unannounced".

Great. Look, no offence to North, who is a talented man, but publishers really need to stop hiring this guy. Seems every game I play these days has him in there somewhere, and as soon as I hear him, I'm yanked out of the experience, because all I can think about is Nathan Drake, then all I can think is "man, I'm getting sick of hearing this guy's voice in every single game I play".

I mean, I was playing World in Conflict last week, and he even managed to turn up in that. World in Conflict!

The man behind Nathan Drake: I "get paid to do what used to get me detention" [GamePro]

Yeah I played the Army of two and dark void demos back to back and i'm like hey Drake, i didn't realised you kept changing bodies. Nolan is great but he should stick to Uncharted, not every other videogame.

It's his job. The more he does, the more he gets paid.

It'd be silly to only do one series just so some whiney gamer kids don't recognize his voice so much.

I've been playing the new Army of Two, and whenever Salem talks, I hear Nathan Drake. Great voice actor though.

So he is Nathan Drake? Well TBH his voice isn't that distinct and i haven't noticed it. But thanks to you, now i will.
    Oh cheer!
Who is he in Assassin's Creed and #1 or 2?

Luke said it in the article. He plays Desmond.

Sounds like North is getting the voice acting world in conflict.

      clap. clap. clap.

This guy has amazing range. You shouldn't wish for him to be dropped at all - but rather that developers don't cast him as Nathan Drake's voice.

The thing is he's capable of doing a different voice. If you hear him as SGT.Girad in SWAT 4, he sounds completely different from the 'Nathan Drake' voice that he does in everything now.

If SWAT 5 turns out to be the new irrational game, HE better be in it with his sexy Girad voice.

Man this guy's been in alot of games.

Didn't Mel Blanc voice of lot of characters in his life time as well?

Granted Blanc was in a different medium but outcomes are still the same.

Yes Mel Blanc did do alot of voices, I would go so far as to say that he was possibly the best voice actor who ever lived.

But the difference between him and Nolan North is huge. I mean Mel Blanc did heaps of different voices, but Nolan North (not sure about his earlier stuff, but since Uncharted at least) has been doing the same voice in every game.

If you're playing a different character in a different game you would expect them to have a different voice. Not the same one you've heard in the last five games you've played.

I've only played a few things with him in (apparently it IS possible to avoid him) but for the most part he sounds like he's just using a single voice all the time.

Its a bit easier to ignore repetition of actor when the actor can do notably different sounding voices, people like Mark Hamill & Jennifer Hale are the kind of actors who could do multiple characters in the same game and you could not notice unless you were really paying attention

I've been sick of him since Prince of Persia '08.
Whats worse is, i'm not sure of his talent. Only time i've been suprised to hear 'oh, Nolan North was So and So' was Raphiel in the TMNT film. He dosent seem to do anything different with his voice between roles.

Well, he is leading Dark Void which is out, what, this coming week?
Didn't know he was in World in Conflict, but hell, just look at his wiki or imdb page and he's gonna be in a game you have played before.
Heck, he was Vossler in FFXII and Hades in God of War.

Yeah, just look at the wiki page. Crazy!

Noted but you can't blame the publishers for actually wanting to stick with a true tried and tested formula, good voice acting should be cherished, even if you feel like you're in one massive Naughty Dog promo :P

Don't hate the Drake, Luke, he's one of the best voice actors of all time!. I can't wait for Uncharted 3........

doesnt he play with a different voice and stuff every game? like voice actors do...?

I'd only ever get sick of him if he was a really shit voice actor.

Nolan North is rapidly becomming the Ben Stiller of the Video Game industry. Don't get me wrong I love Drake, but seriously now.

I would more put him with what Chris said below, Samuel L. Jackson.

But if you were looking for a Comedian, perhaps Seth Rogan. However, he is actually funny & it's actually good when he randomly pops up in a film.

So true... he's like the Will Smith of voice actors... it's getting annoying.

Yeah i have to agree with you on this one Luke. It seems that this industry, just like the film industry has its "It" people. Steve Blum is another good example. He played Spike in the Anime Cowboy Bebop and now he's popping up in games. he plays Oghren in Dragon age, and I've already noticed him in the trailers for Mass effect 2. It really does remove you from the immersion of the game.

Fingers crossed Nolan North does NOT become the voice-artist version of Samuel L Jackson.

OMG I was only thinking about this the other day! First I played AC2 and I noticed that him and the POP have the same voice. THen I played Uncharted 2 and noticed that Nathan Drake had the same voice, THEN I played teh Dark Void demo and noticed he did the voice for the main character in that as well!

Seriously, be creative and look for some orional voice actors for some games, so that I stop thinking of Desmond and Nathan when playing other games!

'and as soon as I hear him, I’m yanked out of the experience, because all I can think about is Nathan Drake, then all I can think is “man, I’m getting sick of hearing this guy’s voice in every single game I play”.'

Absolutely spot on. The guy is good, but not good enough to be in every second game released.

Does ruin the immersion a little when you hear the same voice actor. Everytime i play Medic in TF2 i keep hearing Travis Touchdown.

the will smith of voice actors?

you mean incredibly versatile and exponentially improving actor?

Pro compliment guy "I thought 'Hey don't you want something a little different?"

    Umm... yes...

Between Nolan North and Steve Blum, they've got the most recognisable voices in the gaming industry.

Dont forget Hilary Haag, she's more anime than game though.
