Modders Drag Half-Life 2's Graphics Kicking & Screaming Into 2010

Do you remember the awe you felt first firing up Half-Life 2 in 2004? Now fire it up in 2010. It's more like "aawwww". Flat textures, dull lighting. It's a shame! What this game needs, then, is a makeover.

A makeover like the one provided by Filip Victor. It adds HDR lighting, new models, new textures, an upgrade to the Orange Box engine (Valve performed their own tweaks for the 2007 re-release of the game on Xbox 360) and even some new Steam achievements to the ageing PC version of the original Half-Life 2.

You can see examples of the improvements made in the clip above (though be advised, you'll want to kill the sound). If you like what you see, you can find instructions on how to download the mod below.

Hl2 Pc Achivements & HDR Released [Steam, via Rock, Paper, Shotgun]

Thats all well and good, but if you wanna play an updated version of HL2 then Fakefactory's cinematic mod is surely the mod of choice..

Sure if you like loads of ugly models and engine crashes because they put a 512x512 texture on a beer bottle, then go ahead.

Meanwhile, the main post is all well and nice, but you could of done this back in 2007 when the OB came out my copying the HL2 maps into the Ep2 directory.

The thing is, i don't really notice the 'bad' graphics in HL2. Really good games like HL2 never date as quickly as bad games, you're too distracted by the pacing, characters, story and world to notice the 6 year old engine

true Khuntza, but Alyx looks soooo f—king ugly in cm10

Thanks for the link Khuntza. Haven't heard of that before! Definitely about time I have the original HL2 another run through. This seems like a great excuse to open it up again.

...shiny, so it took this long to implement a bit of ambient occlusion and bigger specular maps!

I honestly no more then 3 days ago loaded up Half Life 2 and started playing through it again from the beginning. I didn't play it long though...I still haven't gotten the crowbar. >.<

Honestly, eh. HL2 is still a great looking game, and minor graphical tweaks are just that-minor.

You want a big change, look at Black Mesa source and HL1.

All I can see is better AA and slightly lighter gamma?
