Nintendo President Pooh Poohs Apple IPad, 3D Technology

The unveiling of the new Apple iPad earlier this week has a lot of people excited. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata is not one of them.

"It was a bigger iPod Touch", Iwata told Associated Press, adding that the new device offered "no surprises".

The Nintendo president was equally down on the recent enthusiasm over 3D technology, saying "I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?"

I don't know. How does shouting/blowing into a handheld on the train make you look?

His buzz-killing didn't stop there, either, responding to questions about motion-sensing handhelds and high definition Wiis with "I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy new machines".

Course not. Not like they're redesigning the case, adding a camera or just making it bigger, are they?

    Apple fanboy alert!

I hate Apple and I still agree. What a hypocrite.

“I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy new machines”.

With the above quotation of his kept in a context; what I think he is referring to is simply the fact that most people who already own a Wii -- and by most, I mean the mass consumers of soccer mums, bless them hotties -- aren't very likely to go ahead and purchase another 'system' without much of an incentive from the current console, seeing as the Wii already provides them with the level of entertainment most adequately.

And I do agree with him on the whole 3D Horse Sh!t here, 3D is not going to bloom, not with a required peripheral to grasp what little there is in 3D anyway. It's been exploited before, and countless times indeed, and this time it is no different, High Definition or otherwise.

For 3D to succeed we need an overhaul of the Television unit of entertainment concept. So in other words the tv panels have to evolve, and to do that takes many years... seeing as most people already have a unit, and aren't likely to invest in another.

Phillips allready have, their screen tricks your eyes into thinking the picture is 3D without glasses...

If they really wanna do 3D Tv they need to get rid of the TV set

either some sort of virtual reality where the glasses/headset would be justified although i still think that would have critics cause you cant really sit down in a group and watch a movie together like that

or holograms which would be a bitch to film for

      do some research dude

      google "sony stereoscopic 3d"

I agree with Iwata on the iPad just being a bigger iPod Touch, but hey, Nintendo's never made any of it's handhelds bigger or smaller have they?

The Apple Ipad may have been a kick in the balls for Nintendo. Perhaps Nintendo may have been planning a motion sensing touch pad controller for their next home console? Could be the reason for the odd public statement talkign down Apples new machine.

Even if you aren't an iPhone/iPad/Apple fanboy, you should be able to see that this is quite an important point in Nintendo's history/career/dominance.

They've never had a worthy challenger to their mobile gaming market. They were winning with the DS for ages. Then Apple comes along, slaps multi-touch onto a phone and the world goes absolutely crazy. Apple completely changed the market. Something only Nintendo have been able to really do in the history of the Video Game industry.

Nintendo are showing signs of being on the defensive. And they have every right to be. Apple is taking their market away from them. Sure, technically the iPhone doesn't do games as well as the DS could with its better input function. But the Wii doesn't make games look as good as the PS360 either, so similarly that doesn't matter. Wii is all about the gameplay, as iPhone is all about the accessibility.

People don't really care that their iPhone games are simplistic (its actually a good thing for a casual market), or that the controls aren't as good (design the games around it, many of them are fine on the iPhone). But its convenient (you need your phone, so you play games on it; but you don't need your DS/PSP since you have a phone that can play games), the games are cheap (US$0.99+) and very accessible. Apple have basically played Nintendo's game even better than they have.

Granted though, this wasn't Apple's plan from the start. They didn't play the gaming card until more recently when the games started to flourish to the point where they had to create more categories for them to be easier to search in the App Store.

      Over analyse much?

Nintendo is a gaming company, and they are absolutely slaying both of it competitors, Sony and freaking Microsoft in hardware sales- two giant companies. They really dont have much to worry about Apple, hes just making a comment about a crappy product Apple has lauded as "game changing" and "the future".

as well as the DS could with its better input function. But the Wii doesn’t make games look as good as the PS360 either, so similarly that doesn’t matter. Wii is all about the gameplay, as iPhone is all about the accessibility.

there totally different Points Graphics is something Fanboys get hung up on they have little bearing on a game IMO controls you have crap ones and they do

Sure The Ipad may make some of these controls better to use but do you have 12inch pockets to keep it in on the Go

The ipad may be made for mobile use But to Me its impractical most people either have a smartphone/iphone + a laptop for working on the go there is little point in having something that goes inbetween especially since it will always be faster to type on something with physical feedback

Plus it can still only run one application at a time :( and has no Flash

most reason i could see using it for is a Mobile Movie player but its a little steep for that

Its quite safe to subjectively say the Ipad sucks and will go down as one of Apple's less successful products ie the Newton.

"“It was a bigger iPod Touch”, Iwata told Associated Press, adding that the new device offered “no surprises”."

Sounds a little like something Nintendo released recently...

Not to be a douche but I think Luke already touched on that in the article:
"...Course not. Not like they’re redesigning the case, adding a camera or just making it bigger, are they?"

I love Miyamoto's expression in the photo. It's like there's some half naked cheerleader or something bending over in the corner of his eye, so he HAS to see it. Priceless.

this guys such a dick haha, “It was a bigger iPod Touch”, dsi XL? “I have doubts whether people will be wearing glasses to play games at home. How is that going to look to other people?”, I'd assume it looks much more normal than people waggleing and swing their arms around in their living room?

itawa speaks the truth! At least about the ipad

Clearly Iwata is just making stupid remarks without thinking about them. But at least he isn't excited about this useless tablet. So far I haven't heard anything to get me interested in it. The same way I couldn't see the reason for iPhone's hype.

    You go girlfriend!

He forgot to mention the name sounds like a female sanitary product- New from libra, the iPad, keeps u fresh AND listening to the latest tunes!

How is that being an apple fanboy? he's clearly just commenting that iwata is being quite hipocritical with his statements about the ipad when compared to the numerous variations of the NDS released.

The author seems to be on the attack regarding a few throw away comments that Iwata made- his first statement is true, the iPad really is just a big ipod touch with nothing new, the second hes just questioning whether people will want to wear special glasses just so they can game, and the last is a comment deriding his own products...

The various iterations of the DS are mostly purely cosmetic, and not meant to be new machines. It can be likened to the iPhone 3G and 3Gs (which came out MUCH faster than the DS iterations, to note) or the PS3 Slim.

When you talk about High Def Wii's, or Motion Sensing Handhelds, you'd have to completely redesign a machine from the ground up, complete with an entirely new set of games to go with it.

Note the key section of the quote "I question whether those features would be enough to get people to buy NEW machines." The current DS iterations are not made for people who already own DS's, i mean, i have a DS lite, and i certainly didn't go out and buy a DSi. They DS iterations are meant for new users. Itawa is talking about how current DS users wont go out and buy a NEW handheld just because of motion sensing (which is true, i'm waiting for a new DS with updated graphics and more features)

      Biased author is biased

Here's hoping this new competition will really put the pressure on Nintendo and force them to develop much more, innovative and fun games. I won't be buying an Ipad, but as a gamer, i'm excited to see Apple develop these innovative products. Us as gamers want to see more competition. It forces companies like Nintendo to develop better products, and we get more out of our hard earned $$$.

Hey buddy, there's a long list of people that are going to be buying iPads, and gamers are no where near the top...

Many gamers own Apple products including Ipod, Iphone, iMac etc.
With mobile gaming becoming more popular, Nintendo would consider Apple to be a huge competitor, regardless of whether gamers are actually buying Ipads.
