Razer, Sixense To Demonstrate Motion-Controlled Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2, not being a Wii game, hasn't been playable by many people with motion controls. But PC peripheral maker Razer and motion-control company Sixense are teaming up at CES to bring motion control to the PC's finest.

Sixense offers wand-shaped motion controllers that use an electromagnetic system as opposed to the Wii's accelerometer and infrared.

A press release hyping the new partnership between Razer and Sixense provides some details about how the controller system works:

Marking the next step in user interface technologies for gaming on the PC, Razer and Sixense scientists and engineers along with select PC OEM partners have been working on ultra-precise one-to-one motion sensing controllers that use electromagnetic fields to track precise movements along all six axes for use in current and future generation PC games. The absolute controller position is tracked to within a mere millimeter for positioning and to a degree for orientation.

The two companies are bullish on the collaboration, of course. Razer USA president Robert "Razerguy" Krakoff, (that's how the press release billed him, said: "The magnetic motion sensor technology combines precision and speed with the freedom of other motion sensing technologies to fill the gap between consoles and PC in terms of human interface devices." And Sixense chief Avi Arad "We are really excited to be working with Razer to bring motion gaming to the PC world. This technology collaboration will allow PC gamers to experience true-to-life gaming in a different dimension."

OK, but how about a quote from someone who we can be sure has played and likes Left 4 Dead 2? The press release provides us Valve Software developer Chet Faliszek, who says: "With this controller, Razer and Sixense have created the most immersive way to play our games ... For us and for our customers, this release represents motion-enabled gaming that's more integrated and visceral than any platform has so far achieved."

Left 4 Dead is being demonstrated with the Razer-Sixense controller at CES. We have people at the show and those people will do their best to try their hand at this.


    I just have zero interest in motion control gaming when it comes to FPS and even action adventures like Assassin's and GTA etc...

    I know they weren't mentioned, but the only FPS that, for me are playable with motion control are off-the rail like House of the Dead which i really enjoyed being a Wii-hater.

    Unless its a FPS that doesn't take itself seriously (which isn't really any i can list) - it won't work. THATS MY OPINION!

      You might want to reserve judgement for the moment.

      WASD is far less practical than the left thumbstick (walking speed, running speed and your choice of angle to start) and neither bear any resemblance to walking.

      The only thing we're looking for is something that can point as accurately as the mouse (which was first made available to the public almost three decades ago).

      The best wand-like pointing device on market is the Wiimote and it's accuracy sucks in comparison to even the earliest of light guns. A better system will exist and we should be encouraging the development of it.

        I'm not sure if I agree with you regarding the left thumbstick being better than WASD. WASD is advantageous in being controlled by three fingers, meaning it is quicker and more precise for changing directions.

        Re: running/walking speed, I think that it is a matter of preference between an analogue control and a shift/ctrl/etc key. I'd probably opt for the latter, personally.

        In terms of moving in angles, I'm not convinced having anything more than 8 angles to choose from is a huge advantage in the real world, especially when WASD is used in conjunction with the mouse providing superior turning control.

    If it's as responsive and accurate at the speeds I use my keyboard and mouse I would definitely consider a purchase, maybe not a permanent replacement but more as a bit of fun.
