It looks like Encounter. I was actually playing this last night on my Atari 800.

Graphics have come a long way!
If there was some way to measure imagination, I bet that has gone down hill over the last 20 years.

I believe that imagination really flourishes when things are more abstract, more simple. Early graphics were very simple, I’m sure we can all agree. You had to be really imaginative to use those basic blocks well. You also had to use imagination to play the game as well.
So you do have a good point. With today’s realistic graphics, imagination isn’t needed as much. Still, developers have the option to simplify graphics if we want something more abstract. Pixeljunk Eden is a good example.
Indie games obviously make use of this more than publisher supported titles. One more reason why I really like the indie scene, I guess.

On another note… It isn’t just video games that are taking away the room for imagination. How many times have you seen a car with one of those drop down screens for the kids in the back?
Sure it is good for getting them to shut up, but what happened to making road trips fun with games like eye-spy or trying to make shapes out of clouds.
I still wonder what effect this will have on growing minds. Will the next generation think differently and less creatively because of reasons like this?
