Unofficial 8-Bit Left 4 Dead Now Available

In November, we reported that Eric Ruth Games was creating a Nintendo Entertainment System-style Left 4 Dead "de-make" for January. Guess what? It's January. And the game is now available for free download for PCs.

Here's a description of the game from Eric Ruth's official site:

Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead is a retro de-make of Valve's hit zombie killing masterpiece. Lovingly recreated in a fashion that would have been acceptable in 1986 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, this de-make stands as the flagship title of the upcoming Pixel Force series from Eric Ruth Games. Go alone, or invite a friend for 2 player co-op against the zombie apocalypse in all 4 of the original game campaigns. 2 difficulties and all 4 of the survivors make a glorious 8-bit appearence, complete with first and second tier weapons scattered along your path to escape. So, grab your controller of choice and kick back with an award-winning retro take on the end of the world with Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead.

You can download the game from several sites, all linked from the Eric Ruth page.

Here's Left 4 Dead's Death Toll mission rendered in Ruth's game:

Team Kotaku has not played the game yet, so we can't tell you if it's any good. But, hey, how about you tell us?

Thanks to Strategy Informer for the tip. That site is among those hosting the game for download.

I cannot wait to get home and download this! Looks amazingly good!

    they didnt attack the witch....pussies

I Haven't played the original on 360 yet so I'm not too sure if I want to download this or not. I don't want it to spoil the experience for me.

Please do yourself a favour and drop everything you are doing immediately and order/buy/rent Left 4 Dead. This 8-bit "de-make" sounds cool but don't let it be your first experience with one of the the best co-op shooters ever! (it's still fun single player btw). Then when you are done with that, get a "real" copy of Left 4 Dead 2 - it's even better.

I'll assume by "real" copy, you mean NOT AUSTRALIAN... oh and not pirated either...
        Smart words.

Thanks for the advice. I've been meaning to get it for a long time, just never got around to it.

It will have to wait a little while longer though, had three weeks off work with no pay so money is starting to get low and I've only just got Too Human, Red Faction: Geurilla and Borderlands anyway.

Go back to work next week so I'll pick it up as soon as I start getting paid again. And yeah, I wouldn't buy the Aus version of L4D2. Even the owner of my local game store told me I should import it.
