BioShock 2 PC's Missing Gamepad Support Also Pissing People Off

The lack of true widescreen support in the recently released BioShock 2 isn't the only shortcoming that has PC gamers steamed. The lack of gamepad support, including the Xbox 360 controller, isn't sitting well with the typically keyboard-and-mouse loving crowd.

The official 2K Games forums (and the Kotaku tips line) is teeming with unhappy PC gamers who want to play BioShock 2 and want to play it on a gamepad. But that's not in the cards right now, as 2K Games says it is "just supporting keyboard and mouse" controls. Why?

"We made quite a number of significant changes to UI / HUD for the PC version of the game," notes to Cult of Rapture's BioShock PC Q&A. "The decision was made early on not to support controllers at all in order to ensure that we got the mouse and keyboard control absolutely right. This of course required a redesign of large parts of the UI and the player HUD. For example, we removed the Weapons and Plasmid Selection Radials in favour of a custom created Weapons Selection Strip which more accurately reflects the keyboard layout."

Whether 2K is willing to update the game to support gamepad support will likely depend on how squeaky the wheels get. For now, buyer beware: if you're attached to your gamepad, don't plan on using it in BioShock 2 any time soon.

Hang on, so Bioshock 1 had widescreen problems, so in bioshock 2 they just repeated the problem? Dumb :S

See, this is why they're trying to make PC games more of a console experience. THIS is why they took our dedicated servers! You whinge about the fact that a game doesn't support controllers and they'll know to console port for next time!

    Something, something, ides of March!

Completely agree... If you buy the game on PC and want to use a Controller... then you should have purchased a Console version. Simple as that.

I seriously hope that 2K do not patch in controller support for the PC version. They clearly tailor the game for the platform it's on and that should be respected.

Otherwise we should be demand a patch for the console version for KB&M support... my PS3 could handle that.

Couldn't agree more if people wana play a fps on a pc with a controller please try your best to win the Darwin awards

Mmhm, no... PC games are becoming more consolised because PC gamers are extremely apathetic towards paying for their games unless they're absolutely forced to... developers are now far more inclined to go for consoles and have PC as an afterthought. Why do you think there hasn't been a big budget *exclusive* PC FPS since Crysis in like 2007?

It actually seems like 2K are one of the few developers who still has some respect for the PC as a gaming platform, and that's why they didn't want controller support.

Why would you want to play it with a gamepad if you were playing on PC? Go play a crummy console version if you want poor aiming and fumbled controls.

Case in point....why do you wanna play an FPS with a controller...on a PC?

you dislike, buy a failbox and get your junk on then.

What sort of an idiot would want to play an FPS with a controller when they have a mouse and keyboard?

I'm starting to wonder if game companies are being jerks by removing features like dedicated servers and forcing horrible drm on us, or they're just giving to us what most gamers deserve?

After being highly dissapointed by MW2 among others, this is the reason I pre ordered Bioshock 2 on 360. I KNEW stuff like this would happen.

what happened to the bioshock comp from 3 days go?

    okay, here's what I don't get.

The elitist PC players always spout rubbish like "the only true way to play an FPS is with a Keyboard/mouse combination" and then when they don't include support for a 360 controller with the PC version on an FPS, all hell breaks loose? WTF? Make up your minds.

I used to game on PC and do myself believe that Keyboard/mouse is the best way to control an FPS for accuracy but was willing to give that up to get away from the constant upgrading to play certain games, being hunched over said keyboard and mouse for hours, knowing that others playing the same games may have better specs than you and therefore have an advantage, patches to fix the damn things all the time....it's endless.

Console = no problems. Everyone's the same. Game works straight outta the box. I can laze on my couch to play it on a flippin huge screen.

Although I miss the Keyboard/mouse control scheme, it's a small price to pay really. Everyone else is using the same as you, so we all have the same disadvantage.

PC gamers also have been saying for a long time that console gaming will eventually die. I think this is well wrong, if anything, it's getting stronger and will be the future of gaming so I can see why developers are going down this route of making console games and porting to PC as opposed to the other way around..... hence why PC gamers are getting so pissed off.

    *Flame shield up*

Complaining that it doesn't support an Xbox controller on the PC version is kind of retarded. If you wanted to play the Xbox version why not just buy the friggen Xbox version.

Doesn't this game need GFWL? Isn't controller support required for GFWL?

This comment has been deemed inappropriate and has been deleted.

I would have thought that if you like a pad over mouse/keyboard you would be playing on a console.
    Each to their own tho...

If you want to play it on a gamepad, go play it on a console...

I'm confused as to why you would want to play a shooter with a game pad.

"to ensure that we got the mouse and keyboard control absolutely right. This of course required a redesign of large parts of the UI and the player HUD."

How in the world is this considered a bad thing? I only use controllers on my pc for games that CANNOT be played well with a keyboard. Real PC gamers only have the widescreen to complain about

Hang on... If people are complaining about Bioshock 2 not supporting a gamepad then why dont the people just play it on a console?. Its really a baseless complaint considering that if they want to use a gamepad then buy the damn console version. Either put up or shut up.

PC gamers can be very hard to please.

"Consoles suck. Real gamers use a keyboard and mouse for shooters".

    then it's...

    "Wahahahahaha. Where's my gamepad support?"

Why the hell would you want to play a FPS with a gamepad?

You buy it on PC, you play with keyboard and mouse. The way FPS's are meant to be played. If you want to use a gamepad buy the stupid console version.

I lol, PC gamers complaining too much effort put into personalising the game for the PC / keyboard / mouse.

For every one complaining there's probably another dozen who are saying "thank god they took the time to do the PC control scheme right, rather than hamper us with a console based control scheme".

Uhhh, this is the dumbest thing i have EVER heard.

If you want to play Bioshock 2 on an xbox 360, why not, you know, buy it for the xbox 360?

Besides which, as someone who played the original both on xbox and PC, the keyboard and mouse is MUCH better

Im sorry I'm just laughing at the f*cking irony of the situation...

No widescreen support? What the hell this isn't some silly FPS(Halo3:Multiplayer) this is BioShock2!!!

In this day and age of limited PC releases and poor console ports, 2K give us a magnificent game in Bioshock 2 and give PC users a UI designed for keyboard/mouse controls, and now people are complaining about the lack of control pad support for PC?!...go figure

I love playing games on my Xbox 360 & PS3, and I'll freely admit that there are many games that I prefer playing with a control pad, and if so I'll purchase the console version of the game over PC.

However, I always choose to play FPS and RPG's on my PC when I can, because I love the more precise control and button options the keyboard and mouse gives me. I know everyone has their own control preferences, but I cannot fathom why anyone would buy the game on PC if they prefer to use a 360 controller.

Honestly if 2K released the game on PC with the exact same UI as its console counterparts, the community would have been in an uproar! So instead 2K caters for the PC gamers, and guess what - there's still an uproar!

PC gaming is chock full of sloppy console ports, and the gaming community gets a good one in the form of Bioshock 2 (widescreen support withstanding - but this has already been acknowledged as a mistake and a fix is on the way).

The last thing I want to see is developers reading news like this, and finally deciding to drop PC support altogether. I mean why bother when piracy is out of control, and it appears people prefer playing the game with a control pad anyway?

Can i say this, who cares about controller support??

If you have a 360 gamepad you own a 360 so buy it on the console! PC GAMES = KEYBOARD MOUSE

I'm still downloading mine from Steam, but the general feeling in the community is that where #1 had lots of care taken for the PC version, in this one they cut every corner possible.
