Fallout 2's Rejected 'Childkiller' Icon Is, Uh, Whoa ...

The artist who drew the perk images for Fallout 2 recently revealed his deleted concept for the game's "Childkiller" status. "Even the designer who requested it realised it was a bad idea," he writes.

Yeah... we can see why that was cut from the game and replaced instead with the "Hated" reputation icon. Just in case it's not clear to you that Vault Boy's kicking mum in the womb, that gown helpfully indicates baby's on board. I don't think you'll go to hell for laughing at this - but you will if you imagine it accompanied by a Looney Tunes kettle drum sound, like I did.

"Childkiller" was not a frivolous or even a desirable thing in Fallout 2. You got the status if you killed a kid, even accidentally, and for some characters it wasn't obvious the game considered them children. Even without offensive art this capability was too controversial for consoles, so in Fallout 3 you couldn't even attack a child character.

Hellforge and the Fallout Wiki both spotted this and linked to the DeviantART page of Brian Menze, where the Fallout 2 artist had published and described his work, but didn't exactly defend it:

This image was unused and the only Vault Boy image to ever be cut from Fallout 2. (I'm sure you can figure out why) I remember when I got the request to do a perk illustration for "child Killer" that there would be no way to keep in from being offensive. I mean really! How do you make an illustration of "child killer" and keep it from being offensive? Anyway for some reason, I thought this was the least offensive way to do it. I have no idea what i was thinking. Even the designer who requested it realised it was a bad idea, so we nixed it. Looking back on it now, I can't believe I drew this.

Menze has since removed the art and its description, but there's no putting the toothpaste back into this tube.

Wow... Even i find this distasteful.

Wow. Tasteless indeed. But giggleworthy. I'm glad he saw reason though. It could've been a *lot* worse though...

      Agreed.

They could've requested 4chan submit art...

    ...awesome...

To be fair, it's a tasteless idea. That sort of thing, if it even needs a picture, should be a guy in jail, afraid of a bunch of other prisoners. In terms of showing the actual act, it probably is the most tasteful way, however. And that's saying something.

    haha wow. harsh but hillarious.

You are all soft. This is a wicked image.

...And now I have a new avatar

its ok everybody! I'm transferring it onto a t-shirt now!

Haha I would have loved this.

Oh Vault Boy and his antics.

To be fair, this is the kind of thing people are asking for by asking for R18+ ratings.

I don't mean to start a fire here, I'm all for the R18+ rating, but you have to think about what that opens the doors to besides zombie-gore.

This in no way outweighs the amount of violent games that would be appropriately rated as R18+ and out of the hands of kids instead of being rated MA15+ as they are now.

Also, I've not heard anything about people wanting an R18+ rating just so they can see cartoon images of a pregnant woman being kicked in the gut.

How is this what were asking for by an R18+ rating

from memory when this was released australia still went under the old ESRB rating system and B) the developers themselves knew it was a bad thing to put into the game

i also wouldnt be surprised if this somehow came in under the RC clasification anyhow

    Brilliant, simply Brilliant.

PLEASE don't start an R18+ flame war here.

I really don't think this is that bad. Maybe it's because I've grown up playing videogames and now I'm and empty shell of a person, not emotionally affected by even the most extremely sickening violence...

But really, I don't see the problem. I understand why it got scrapped, but you might as well put Ross Noble in gaol for swearing at and making jokes at the expense of the audience.

    kick da baby

My thoughts for such a logo is child-sized tombstones.
    Still kinda creepy tho.

Won't Somebody think of the Children!!

    (Don't kick the baby!)

There is R18+ and there is socially acceptable...

this image is not socially acceptable

It's pretty funny, don't know what u dogs are getting down about.

i have this tattooed on me.
