Take A Tour Of The New, Improved Steam

So, Steam finally has a new style. And it's a good one. Very clean, nice and modern. Let's take a closer look.

You'll see that outside of an improved friends feature most of the updates at this stage are visual ones, with most of Steam's core functionality remaining the same, meaning you can jump in and find your way around with no problems. The bigger improvements, like an in-Steam news service, are yet to be implemented. Here, then, are the highlights, showing how the update has affected each of Steam's key areas.

Your library now has a few display options, including this iTunes-like tiled display. It's pretty, but if you've got more than a dozen games installed, takes a while to load.

Here's your "standard" library screen, which now has some artwork to liven things up. Also note the handy little cloud icon indicating support for Steamworks.

Here's the settings screen. As you can see, it's exactly the same, so you won't have any issues tinkering with your setup.

Not much has changed at the store's front page, either, though it does look a lot more presentable.

The individual pages in the store have been tidied up, the clutter of information and links streamlined into something much more manageable.

Game info pages are now much more helpful, presenting all kinds of useful information like how many of your friends are currently playing a game, and what achievements are on offer. While we're on the subject... are those some Half-Life 2 achievements I see there?

The downloads area is now a little more informative. Incidentally, as you can see, for some reason Steam began downloading Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer mode all over again, despite the fact I already had it installed. All 7.5GB of it. This happen to anyone else?

Here's the news page. Again, no big changes aside from a clean-up.

The modern warfare 2 multiplayer thing has been happening to a lot of people. I just reinstalled the game (from dvd) and it then just updated it (which was around 20mb). If you purchased yours as a steam game rather than retail then I'm not really sure how to go about it, as for some reason 7gb of mw2 data gets deleted and I have no idea why (a fair few people are having this problem).

Why wasnt your MW2 deleted? Mine was :(

Yes my MW2 started download 7.5 gb aswell. so i dont know whats going on there.

Yeah I had the Modern Warfare 2 download problem. Currently reinstalling it :(

got issues with all of the websites, got this error testshell-error

    anyone else getting this?

Yeah bro. I can't view the store/community/news pages.

On top of that the "Games Grid" is laggy has all get up, and the images really need some anti-aliasing.

      Hopefully that doesn't stick around.

There is a workaround for this, I read on another forum but haven't actually tested it myself (as I haven't opted into the beta).

You might want to google it to make sure, but apparentely you need to untick "Use Automatic Settings" in your IE LAN Proxy settings.

Yeah steam downloaded my MW2 MP as well. After it finished it came up with an error when i tried to play it. Something about localization.txt missing. I fixed it by reinstalling from the discs but if you downloaded from steam not sure what to do.

I've been using the beta too and I'm really loving the new design. I also had that same Modern Warfare 2 problem though! Glad to know I wasn't the only one.

I've had the MW2 problem as well. Might be nice if someone could put a warning at the top of the article?

Man the MW2 thing pissed me off soo much, i uninstalled and reinstalled steam to see if i could fix it. Ended up installing MW2 using the DVD i have. Its a beta what r u gonna do, ei?

i love the layout, being able to see achievements and all the other stuff on one page related to one game is excellent, but i mentioned before the lack of the store access is a bit of a bummer

other than that issue i am all for the UI update

i didn't have the MW2 issue... however Company of Heroes was trying to download again for me...

Also i couldn't view the store... got the "testshell-error" error... lol

Beta works great for me but has anyone else noticed that you can't choose where the downloads come from anymore? I had my download server set to NSW (Telstra) so most of my Steam usage is unmetered on BigPond but the option has disappeared.

nope, the options still there...in the same place.
Top left click Steam then settings then the DownLoad tab
