Don't Expect World Of Warcraft On Video Game Consoles, Ever

World of Warcraft, the world's most popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game, is available on the PC and on the Mac. It is not available on home consoles like the PS3 and the Xbox 360. And it probably won't be.

"I think there's a lot of reasons," World of Warcraft lead producer J. Allen Brack told game site G4tv. "There's not one thing. One is, it takes a long time to develop an MMO. The lifecycle of consoles being what they are, you have to really time when your console's going to come out, what its projected lifecycle is going to be with when your game is going to be, which is challenging."

The life cycle for consoles can last up to ten years plus; however, it can also be much shorter. Then, there are hard drive issues: all PS3s have hard drives installed in the consoles, but that is not true for the Xbox 360.

"There's those technical challenges," he continued, "there's patching challenges, there's the quality controls that we have vs. the quality controls that say, a Microsoft or Sony or Nintendo has. All those things sort of raise the bar in terms of the challenges and then specifically in the case of WoW, WoW was designed to be a keyboard game and its control scheme and its camera controls and the number of abilities that you have and the spells and how things work are very keyboard-centric. The idea of translating that to a gamepad is a very, very challenging proposition."

Okay, fine, there are hurdles, but if MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XI have come to home consoles, then certainly World of Warcraft can do it, too. Right? Right?!

"I think it's unlikely that WoW comes to the consoles," he added. "It is something that we talk about on a pretty regular basis, but someone is going to figure out how to make an MMO on a console and they're going to be wildly successful. I have no doubt about that."

That game, it seems, will not be World of Warcraft. Sorry console gamers!

Blizzard Thinks About A Console World Of Warcraft "All The Time," Prospects Dim [G4]

Thats a lazy arse excuse. Decent interface design cures the controller problem and adding "Game requires the Xbox 360 Hard Drive" on the back of the box cures the storage problem.

Did Blizzard make the console port of Diablo? They've not made any another console games have they? Perhaps someone is a bit scared to enter the market knowing they have to do more work rather than just add content to their existing engine and raking in the money

They're already raking in the money. I guess Blizzard has reached the point where further profit becomes "unnecessary".

Because Blizzard know the game would be horrendous on a console.. people need to learn there are console games and then there are PC games.. and some just can't be both.. or they lose way too much quality in the transition.

Besides it makes boatloads now.. there's no reason to cheapen their name for a small amount of quick cash.

The Lost Vikings and Rock and Roll Racing are to of my favourite Blizzard games from the Super Nintendo. Infact looking at their wikipedia page shows more than just Diablo and Star or War Craft games. Not recently I'll admit.

As someone whose played WoW, I can not see it being playable on a 360/PS3 Controller without the game being dumbed down even more. Of course the PS3 you can just plug a Keyboard and Mouse into the USB ports, you can on an X-Box too it just won't work because Microsoft won't allow it.

Storage space on the 360 is probaly the biggest issue IMO, simply because it's stupidly expensive for the HDD's. But probaly needing a Gold Subscription and a WoW Subscription would turn most users off.

And at the end of the day they have a huge user base paying $15 US a month to play their game. They are a success. Why do they need to get off their "lazy" butts and make console friendly version for the game? I argue the development hurdles and costs would not be worth the extra console revenue.

I take it they're deliberately ignoring the fact you can plug a keyboard and mouse into a PS3. Let's face it, if you really wanted to play WoW on your PS3, you'd probably fork out the extra $30-40 you'd need for a cheap keyboard and mouse.

never made any console games besides a diablo port? HAHAHAHAH

Lost Vikings & Rock and Roll Racing Are a few i remember fondly from the 16 bit days.

    Great games.

other things to consider. ontop of paying your live/psn subcrition, you then have to fork over the cash for for WoW. Next i can just see the amount of people complaining about how hard a fare few of the achievements are.

Hell, this might sound elitist, but theres people who dont even know to move out the fire in wow and thats with a mouse and keyboard. Next look at pvp, shadowrun was great when it was released right 360 users? it was really fun getting owned by keyboard and mouse users.

WoW just doesnt work on consoles, so please for the love of god, stop asking! If it makes you happy, blizzard have said that if theres any current game of theirs that could work on a Console, Diablo 3 would be it.

for a mmo to be successful on the consoles they would need almost no subscription costs, access to only a handfull of spells and an awesome VOIP.

for most companies, the risk far outwieghs the slim chance of success.

Buy a computer and play it on there if you're so cut about it, people. It's far better on the computer than it will ever be on a console.

The way I see it, if you own a current-gen console (I don't think they qualify as "next-gen" anymore) and play them online, then you have an internet connection. If you have an internet connection, you probably also have a computer. With a computer and an internet connection, you can just play the PC/Mac version (if you own a computer that isn't up to WoW's specs you are a sad, sad person). There's no need for a console version.
