Kotaku Census 2010: The Games You Love

The machines you play on are one thing, but what really captures a gamer's heart is the games they play. So let's see which are your favourites.

Now, unlike our previous polls, this one has the potential to be a little more wide-ranging. A little more open. There are only a handful of gaming machines out there, for example, but there are thousands of games. So we can't simply ask you what your favourite game, or game series is. Sorry. These polls don't work that way, and we're not going to sit here and publish the thousands of different answers we'd receive.

So instead, we're going to focus on gaming's most treasured franchises, the ones that have spanned consoles, redesigns and in some cases decades, then gone on to sell millions of copies around the world. You know, the ones that transcend the idea of being single games, and become properties, things you love. And we're going to pit them against each other, put you on the spot, see which ones you love more.

What's Your Favourite Nintendo Franchise?

You can only choose one. Doesn't matter what criteria you use, whether it be core console titles, spin-offs or handheld games, just pick the Nintendo series/franchise you love the most.

What's Your Favourite PlayStation Series?

There have been three PlayStation consoles (four if you count the PSP), and all three have been home to a fantastic range of games. Which have been your favourites?

NOTE: Yes, there have been isolated examples of Metal Gear and Final Fantasy games appearing on other platforms, but since most core titles from both have remained synonymous with the PlayStation, we've included them here.

What's Your Favourite Xbox Series?

It lacks the history of some of the other platforms, but the two Xbox consoles have seen their fair share of quality, exclusive franchises. What's your favourite?

What's Your Favourite PC Franchise?

There are many long-running, successful franchises on the PC, but you can only choose one. So which will it be? And yes, World of Warcraft is a Warcraft game, so it's included in that.

What's Your Favourite Grand Theft Auto Game?

Being multiplatform games at heart (remember, even earlier versions were also available on PC!), it seemed unfair to include GTA under the umbrella of one of the platform holders. Besides, it's big enough of a cultural force to get its own poll.

What's Your Favourite Call Of Duty Game?

If GTA gets its own poll, then so too does Call of Duty, Activision's wartime sales sledgehammer.

And, we're done here. Thanks for helping us settle which of the big dogs is biggest (at least in your eyes). We're coming to the end of our census polls, but there should be one or two more popping up between now and next week to keep you busy. Oh, and to help contribute to SCIENCE.

Hey, where's the option for Chinatown Wars in the GTA question? So would have answered that if it was there, had to go with GTA2 instead.

Wow, that's a pretty huge, glaring omission... GTA Chinatown Wars is actually the only GTA game I've played.

It's such a shame that Command & Conquer, once my most favourite series on any platform ever, is no longer anywhere NEAR the top of my list.

    I miss you, Westwood.

I had trouble choosing my fav Nintendo and PS3 games cos I haven't really liked any recently. Zelda I guess and Gran Tourismo because it WAS awesome. The latest is lame. Then I get to Xbox and their's Halo, Gears of War, Mass Effect and Forza. OMG. They're all awesome. Xbox so owns

What about Age of Empires as a Favourite PC series, surely 4 games and 5 expansion packs counts for something. :(

Um, I don't play either Call of Duty or GTA. Neither really appeal to me. You need a "I don't play GTA/COD" option

who said you have to answer every question? it seemed pretty obvious that if you don't play GTA/CoD, you just don't answer the question.

Where was the Saints Row option in the GTA question... I know they're not the same publisher / series... but they're essentialy the same.

Except, Saints Row is, y'know... enjoyable.

its funny cause its true! :)

      Saints 2 is very funny

The best GTA game isn't on that list, Saint's Row. A far, far, far better game than GTAIV, and far more loyal to the franchise than the bizarre mockery of a game that was GTAIV.

I take issue with the Final Fantasy comment. "Isolated examples"? I-VI all appeared on the NES/SNES. That's more than 'isolated', that's almost half of the series!

Mass Effect isn't even 360 exclusive, and to a degree, neither is Halo...both are on PC

A few of those Playstation games are also on the PSP, what's your point?

Comparing a console to it's handheld counterpart is a little different to comparing a console and a PC.

You don't need to vote if you don't play the related game.

i thought it was bit stupid to think that everyone loves a gta game just because it was successful.

even though it sold well, doesn't mean it was everyone's taste.

Meh, San Andreas all the way GTA wise.. if you havent played it thats your bad.

That world was simply amazing, Id love to see it redone, it was epic in scale and things to this day, so much to do so much to see. Anyone else find those dirt crossroads that never got dark?

Id love to see a remake, or a game of that scale again. IV was great but didnt hold my attention like that did.

+1 for Age of Empires btw.. wtf?

Even though I'm loving IV's multiplayer - I agree that San Andreas is the pinnacle - it doesn't hurt that it was also the first one I ever played so that makes it even more special!

no planescape torment option for pc = fail. INFINITY ENGINE FOR LIFE.

    Hey guys.

I think you needed to put Final Fantasy in the Nintendo section as well. My favorite games on that system were 1,2,3,4 and 5. So I had to clicked other.

Pretty much all of those polls were really hard, I really struggled between 2 different answers for each of the polls in regards to gaming system. The game series ones however, I'm not actually a fan of CoD or GTA.

wow actual exams must suck for you

Not sure that Final Fantasy belongs under PlayStation, despite the disclaimer. The only PlayStation FF exclusives this console generation were Dissidia and Crisis Core, both on the PSP, plus an enhanced port of Tactics, whereas Nintendo platforms have had five Crystal Chronicles exclusives, a Final Fantasy gaiden, Tactics A2, Revenant Wings, and assorted Chocobo titles.
