PSP Grabs A Big Slice Of The Console War Pie In Japan

Black is back, as Japan went all in on PSP purchasing recently, giving the PlayStation family the win in the weekly hardware contest, nearly doubling sales of the Wii.

PlayStation Portable sales saw a big jump in Japan this past week, according to Media Create's latest figures, a little surprising when a pair of Nintendo DS games show in first and third place on the software side of things. The remainder of the chart is less surprising, with the Wii taking second, outselling the PlayStation 3 and the three Nintendo DS platforms clustered together in the middle.

Here is Japan's bestselling console and handheld hardware, for the week of March 1 to 7, with all the good surprises already spoiled.

  • PSP - 64,808
  • Wii - 33,880
  • PlayStation 3 - 28,824
  • Nintendo DSi LL - 23,611
  • Nintendo DSi - 15,017
  • Nintendo DS Lite - 4316
  • Xbox 360 - 2764
  • PlayStation 2 - 1839
  • PSP go - 1275

Why the hell are people buying PSPs? There hasn't been a game on it in 2 years.

Also doesn't everyone already own a PSP in Japan for Monster Hunter?

I think this shows that we are at a point, where Sony need to kill the PSP go in it's current form. In my opinion, Sony need to release a PSP2 which is like the Go form factor, but with a UMD drive and second thumb stick, if they do that, they could increase sales even further.

Where have you been? There's been loads of good psp games in the past year.
