So, How Laggy Is PlayStation Move?

While at GDC, we noticed that the new PlayStation Move controller has a little lag. Want to see how much lag?

The technical gurus at Digital Foundry took a 60 frames-per-second camera to GDC, went and used the Move for a bit, and took this footage. It doesn't take the 20 per cent speed to see that there's some noticeable lag there.

Not enough to render the controller useless, of course, but enough to have an impact on any game that requires precise timing.

In its defence, this is pre-release stuff, and there's no telling what magic can be conjured by Sony's engineers (and developers) between now and the peripheral's release.

It's not the controller thats lagging, it's the Playstation Eye. The controller and his hand move at exactly the same time, it's just the time it takes to update it on the screen.

I'm no camera expert but doesn't this have to do with the refresh rate of the camera? I don't think this kind of thing can be fixed with software.

You do know you can get the PS Eye running at 60FPS with a resolution of 640x480, right? On the other hand, if you've ever actually used any image recognition software, you'd also notice exactly how much processing power goes into figuring out what is and is not on the screen (and that's where you get your lag).
