Sony Thinks Kids Playing 3D Is "A Stretch"

Nintendo is releasing a 3D glasses-free, 3D portable game console called the Nintendo 3DS to be "enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses". Sony, your move.

"Our focus on 3D right now is on the console," Sony Computer Entertainment of America's John Koller told website IGN. "There's a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we're going to concentrate our efforts there."

Sony will wait and see how the Nintendo 3DS does.

"I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable," he continued. "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. Eight and nine year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now."

But eight and nine year olds seem to like watching movies in 3D, so why wouldn't they enjoy playing video games in 3D?

Im sorry Sony, but you're ok with releasing your bluray movies in 3D on the ps3, promoting the fact in a big way that you can update your firmware to incorporate this... touting it even... then slamming Nintendo for having a 3DS?

    Jealous much?

You release a now outdated control method, trying to say you've one-upped Nintendo, and they just came over, flipped you over and made you their prisonbitch. I'm not a huge fan of the Wii myself, my kid loves it, but even I have to admit the DS is a fantastic piece of hardware... I look forward to the 3DS unveiling in a major way.

    Epic fail Sony. Epic fail.

Yeah, kids hate that 3D crap. They like to work. Milk cows and plough fields and stuff. Oh wait that's farmers.

Kids love 3D Sony, you ass.

      Well said :D

Errr put it in Animal Crossing Part 7 3DS and they will LOL

I think the 3DS could swing either way at this point. Is a feature that could potentially be detrimental worth buying a whole new DS?

    In 4 years after launch

    "New revolutionary PS3DP!"

"But but but its not the 3d nintendo has cause... this one? This.... its BLACK!"

I think people are taking Koller's comments the wrong way. I'm sure kids will enjoy it fine. He's talking from a business and financial perspective. keep ur knicker's on. He isn't "slamming" Nintendo's approach. This is the same person not very long ago that said Nintendo prints money.

I didn't realise that only eight and nine year-olds were playing DS.

I can't wait for the big N3DS thingy reveal at E3...

picture it: the stage lighting slowly fades to black, the assembled press & nintendo fanboys start to squeel like excited school grrls, fog machines pump smoke on stage and then the music starts, its some classical opera type shit for maximum impact, someone in the front row faints from over excitement -or pehaps from game show BO, Iwata walks to the stage and pulls a heart rate monitor from his jacket pocket, he talks forever about how it will revolutionise gaming then exits to mild polite applause, Miyamoto arises out of the stage floor wearing a metroid suit which he slowly removes while the crowd goes mental, then lasers start and mega speakers start counting down ... 10... 9... OMG!!!!!

“I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable,” he continued. “Having been in the portable space for quite awhile"..."
Oh I remember, back when Sony made the Gameman... Walkgame? Oh wait. That never existed, just the Gameboy vs Walkman.

"... bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.”
Your research on 'gimmicky' motion controllers? How's that going? Whats that? You're releasing it as a product.
    Oh Snap!
    Take that Nintendo!
