Xbox 360 Notches Rare Triumph Over Wii In February

The Xbox 360 clocked in with a rare victory over the Wii among console sales in the United States for February, according to figures released today by the NPD Group.

Microsoft's console sold 422,000 units during the month, nearly 25,000 more than the Wii at 397,900. A quick check of previous reports shows the Xbox 360 beating the Wii only once since the latter's launch, a triumph largely ascribed to low availability during the 2006 holidays.

Of the three major consoles, only the Wii saw a sales drop, decreasing by some 67,000 units. The Xbox 360 added some 90,000 units from January to February and the PS3 went up from 276,900 to 360,100.

The US hardware contest, according to NPD Group from January 31 to February 27, was:

  • Wii - 397,900
  • Nintendo DS - 613,200
  • Xbox 360 - 422,000
  • PlayStation 3 - 360,100/li>
  • PSP - 133,400
  • PlayStation 2 - 101,900

Total hardware spend was $US426.4 million, still sharply down from February 2009 when US consumers dropped $US534.2 million on consoles and handhelds.

Lets hope this is a start of something new... of well, the Wii decreasing! YAY!

Mass Effect 2 and the bundle would have helped the 360's sales. Bioshock 2 would have helped it aswell.

Good news, I like to see either the 360 or the ps3 to sell more than the wii.

I heard reports of Wii shortages in the US again recently, that probably explains the 360 win last month.

Either way it's good to see someone else on the top spot for once but I don't expect it to last unless the Wii shortages last.

While theirs hordes of people that dont know what actual gameplay is, a gimmicky wand and the same games weve played for 20 years (albeit with new improved completely useless control schemes) will win out.
