Activision & Bungie Deal Is A Second Chance For Both

So, Halo creators Bungie are working with Activision on a new piece of IP. For the next ten years. I hope for everyone's sake it's not a first-person shooter!

For Bungie's sake, this is because the team has already released a first-person shooter. Lots of them. In fact, between Marathon and Halo it's what the studio has been doing for over fifteen years. But Bungie didn't always make first-person shooters: Myth is a strategy title, while the sadly-forgotten Oni is a pretty decent third-person action game.

Mac fans will also remember that, before it was an Xbox shooter, Halo was originally planned as a strategy game. It'd be great to see the company spread its wings and, with a new publisher and a new IP, try a new style of game to go with them.

For Activision's sake, it's because the last thing the company (and the market) needed was another studio working on shooters. The publisher has a team working on Singularity. Treyarch is working on a Cold War Call of Duty game. Then there's the remnants of Infinity Ward, who are presumably toiling away in an underground salt mine on what's left of Modern Warfare 3, which we'll assume is the game Activision has slated to appear in 2011.

That's quite enough shooters, thank you. Quite enough Call of Duty games too, now you mention it.

Here's hoping that this deal will prove a breath of fresh air for both parties (and us!), giving all involved an opportunity to provide us with a AAA franchise that's neither a Call of Duty game nor another first-person shooter.

Ahh yeah but what about quality shooters? (Shh i do enjoy Treyarch's World at War and excited for the Vietnam? thing they're gonna release).

But still... i can tell Singularity is gonna bomb hard. MW3 is probably gonna bomb. The reason why it was so successful was because it was Infinity Ward. World at War sold nearly as much as COD4, but i don't see their newest shattering records. It was because it was modern and Infinity. And since probably 80% of fanboys of IW know about whats going on, their gonna boycott MW3 and go to Respawn. It will be just casual gamers on MW3 and none of them will buy DLC which is gonna hurt Activision's pockets.

I don't know what i would like to see with Bungie. They seem like a Bioware to me. They could pull a lot of different genres off cause they put that effort into their titles. I would like a MMO but not with Activision/Blizzard.

Eh i'll just say RPG. They do tell a good story.

For some reason, I expect this to be a 3rd person action game. I don't know why, but I think you're right about it being a second chance for both ;)

I'm not a big fan of strategy games, nor is the general public, but I agree that the fps market is getting too crowded.
I bet they will release some form of action game, probably in third person.

Everyone should try and make Bioware style RPGs...even SquareEnix.

    Selfish dream...I know...
