Crysis 2 Writer On Modern Warfare 2 Story: 'Jesus, What Have You Been Doing?'

In November, British sci-fi author Richard Morgan said he was hired by Electronic Arts to write stories for three upcoming titles. Today, EA revealed one of them to be Crysis 2. Morgan took the occasion to rip Modern Warfare 2.

"I thought Modern Warfare 2 was an immense disappointment," Morgan told CVG. "It was a massive stepdown from CoD4. What I thought when I played it was, 'Jesus guys, what have you been doing? You've not ramped anything up. The story is worse and the game doesn't really hang together, it's just a bunch of mission levels.'"

"It made no sense. It was totally implausible," Morgan added. "It doesn't resolve. Basically, all the things that bad storytelling does. I just think they were way too impressed with themselves and that's always a danger. It's just unfortunate."

That doesn't mean Morgan dislikes sequels implicitly (he's writing one, of course). He praised Uncharted 2's creators for revisiting the first game and using its lessons to fix or enhance the sequel's story.

"They really took it to a new place and you can honestly say to people if you played the first game, the second one is the same but better," he said. "Modern Warfare 2 is the same but ... way worse. And it cost more money."

I totally agree, but I don't think it's IW's fault. It seemed to me like Activision just wanted a sequel ASAP, and didn't give IW enough time to take a new direction. Either that or they just wanted more of the same cause they knew it'd sell well. Annoying really... definitely not gonna get MW3 if the same thing happens. I just wish I didn't get MW2 on Steam so I can get a refund.

Don't defend anything here. The soil is dead because they didn't roate the crops, New ip's should be made, not the 700th sequal in a franchise.

I traded in Mod2 for Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires. I just did not enjoy MOD2 at all. The story was not as good as the first MOD and well....I don't know. I just did not like it.

Crysis 2 is a game I am looking forward to. I WILL be getting from a store with a return policy though.

Didn't give them time? They gave them 2 years - it's not like they spent all that time making massive improvements to the engine or anything. It should be more than enough time to write a decent story. Instead they delivered something that felt like somebody had come up with some ideas for levels and then tried to write a story to tie them together, and in the process written a **** story.

We all saw how spectacularly bad the last CoD boycott went. No doubt if they push out a stinker it will sell like hot cakes regardless of how good the story is or how it further spits in the face of the PC market.

Sad but true. There are waaay too many mindless sheep on this planet. I'm still on the boycott train and happy to be here.

"I just think they were way too impressed with themselves and that’s always a danger"

      Also very true.

I wonder if crysis 2 will have alien butt sex , ala "The steel remains"

    Ramp it up Richard
    *Pun intended*

Make you a little uncomfortable did it, did you have some odd "reactions" occur whilst reading that bit?

Morgan's Kovacs trilogy and Market Forces are some of the best modern sci-fi novels out there. If EA and Crytek don't cut too much of his story out, Crysis 2 will be unbelievable.

and it also made a lot more money.

I am pretty sure I came to terms with the fact that MW2s story was going to be awful months before the game came out.

could not agree more it was a massive let down

Giantbomb interviewed this guy, he's pretty awesome.

Totally agree, I hadn't played the first Modern Warfare so I had absolutely no idea what was going on

Nick, it didn't make any more sense even if you had played COD4.

Indeed, Im still scratching my head over certain plotpoints... like why a GOOD GUY would launch a freakin nuke...

MW2 is at all no ways bad .... its just ... over analyzed LOVED hated by many .... be honest its probably one of the better games installed on your pc/ps3/360 ... !! (ONE SHOULD HOPE) if not which planet klargon did you come from? bring us your magical consoles of undeniable AAA goodness

Yeah, it cost more money, and it made a hell of a lot more too.

Money might of had something to do with it. Seems the almighty dollar replaced the desire to make a great game.

umm, am i the only one who bought this only for the multiplayer with full intent on never playing the story missions? i kinda value my time a little more than that is all...
