Details About Alien Prequel

Last year, legendary film maker Ridley Scott signed on to helm a prequel to the Alien film he directed 1979 sci-fi classic Alien. The idea of Scott doing another Alien film sounds terrific. But is it actually going to happen?

"There's no question about it," Scott tells MTV, "we're going to make the film." Currently, Scott is working on the script's fourth draft. A story has been hammered out, and Scott needs to get the script in good enough shape so he can figure out the budget.

"It's set in 2085, about 30 years before Sigourney [Weaver's character Ellen Ripley] ," says Scott. "It's fundamentally about going out to find out 'Who the hell was that Space Jockey?' The guy who was sitting in the chair in the alien vehicle - there was a giant fellow sitting in a seat on what looked to be either a piece of technology or an astronomer's chair."

The movie, which will apparently be in 3D, could be out in cinemas in 2011 or 2012. According to Scott, it will not be necessary to have previously seen the earlier Alien films to understand the prequel.

Alien spawned a franchise that encompasses film sequels, comic books, merchandise and video games.

Nooooooooooooooo! Don't do it! It'll be just like Star Wars, a prequel coming along and stamping all over the brilliant extended universe in the comics and novels...

yeah but unlike george lucas ridley scott isnt useless. with him at the helm i have faith he will do the series he created justice.

Yeah I'm a little on the fence about this. There might be some interesting info here, but more likely it will just be something shallow that won't live up to the series. Mind you I actually much preferred Aliens to Alien, Alien was still good, just a little slow building suspense.

Except... I hated Alien 3 and Resurrection.

I admit, though, that with Scott back it could be great, but that's also what we thought about Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

So, yeah, going to see it, absolutely. Let's just hope it's worth it.

And thanks for a nice bit of non-specifically-video-games related piece of news. :)

The Alien films (especially 3 and 4) are infamous for being destroyed by FOX. The studio just couldn't leave the crew alone to make a good movie and it shows. The unfinished "Assembly" cut of Alien 3 is superior to the released film in every way (it's in the Quadrilogy box set btw). Scott is one of my favourite directors of all time, but he hasn't made a good movie since Matchstick Men in 2003. I worry about this being terrible. I hope he knows what he is doing.

@706: Aliens was a completely different genre of film. Where Alien was a slow-burn, less-is-more psychological horror set in space (that incidentally wasn't really a sci-fi movie), Aliens was a sci-fi popcorn action film with monsters, explosions and guns. Both are great films but for VERY different reasons. I vastly prefer Alien, but it's a matter of opinion.
