PS3 Update Readies Console For 3D Gaming

At first glance, the PlayStation 3's latest firmware update - which brings the system to v3.30 - seems inconsequential. Some trophy reshuffling. But it's the behind-the-scenes stuff that's more interesting, as it readies the console for 3D gaming.

Yes, while most of the release accompanying the update bangs on about how it will "make it easier to claim bragging rights among your friends" by letting you...arrange your trophies, tucked away at the foot of the reveal is "this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony's 3D BRAVIA TVs".

Considering half of you don't even have a standard HDTV, this won't rock the majority's socks off. But if you're actually planning on diving headfirst into the 3D era? Know that once you download this update – which is already out - your PS3 will be ready.

Bring on the 3D TV's!! Why? Because hopefully I can get a non 3D HDTV for cheap as clearance stock :)

Anyone got a working PS3 laser I can ninja?

Soz, boss walked over and I did my usual tab, enter and ctrl+tab trickery.

      This is what I was going to type;

I am really looking forward to 3D gaming, hopefully it will inspire people to think of at least half decent storylines instead of the macho Americanism BS we've been fed as of late. The only downside is my PS3 has been out of action for the past few months - Has anyone got a PS3 laser that I can ninja?

Hopefully this update will push 3D into the mainstream for home users quicker.

With the major TV producers paying big bucks to keep some 3D Bluray titles exclusive and none of the World Cup being shown in 3d here in Oz they're doing their damndest to slow down the uptake of the standard.

It'll likely also push addiitonal PS3's into homes with 3D sets which is a big boost in this gen.

we wear goggles to watch our televisions or it comes flying out of the screen in full 3d ? I cant want .. what do .. eat ... an apple ... fried ... I dont get it.

So few people have HDTV's, a tiny fraction have 3D capable TV's, and few again will be safely allowed to use them and this is what they are spending their time on.

    Shakes head.

Eventually, 3D TVs will be common, and in most households, I think. It's the logical progression in Television technology.

While I doubt it will be this generation that gets it right, it will happen.

An apt comparison, I think, is the Wii. Sure, it may not be the best example of it, and it will improve, but people will still buy it for the novelty of having something so new and interesting.

Oh, and no, the TVs that they are mentioning do not require /any/ glasses of any kind to be worn to acheive the 3D effect. It uses tiny slats across the screen so that each eye sees a different image, allowing a perception of depth.

Got the 3d samsung tv's into work the other day, been playing xbox with it, the tv itself just converts the image to 3d, we haven't updated the firmware or anything on xbox yet, guessing it will have to like the ps3 for better results. Can't wait personally, hopefully it adds a bit of "outness" to it instead of just a bit of depth. And yes, they requier the glasses, non glasses 3d tv's are still being shown at trade shows, but haven't it the consumer market yet.

    yes they DO need glasses.
