Red Faction Movie Looking For A New Planet To Blow Up

Just because a game isn't a AAA franchise doesn't mean it can't work as a movie. Take Hitman, for example. OK, bad example. How about Red Faction!

Publisher THQ is looking to get a movie adaptation of the franchise off the ground, figuring it's been long enough since Total Recall for the world to embrace a new story about gun-toting colonists and explosions on Mars.

It's part of a new strategy by THQ, following the lead of other studios like Capcom and EA, where games are approached as not just games, but as media properties. So an upcoming Red Faction game, for instance, would begin development at the same time a movie project based on Red Faction got off the ground, the two would be linked, and would be released at the same time.

This kind of thing has happened before - Enter the Matrix springs to mind - but hopefully the results in this instance would be better. And while a Red Faction movie is yet to be officially unveiled in name, in discussing the multimedia strategy, THQ's Danny Bilson told CVG that an imminent reveal on the publisher's policy will centre on the franchise.

A number of Red Faction games have been released over the past decade, most focusing on the struggle between Martian miners and military forces from Earth. There's always a big emphasis on blowing up not just people, but buildings as well.

    Total Recall was awesome :P

There is no way I (or probably anyone) would not think of that movie while watching a Red Faction movie.

I don’t like this whole “media prospects” policy, the main focus should be on making the game great. Theoretically what’s to stop the higher ups vetoing developer ideas because they wouldn’t translate well to film?. Who the hell cares about the film version anyway?, most video game films fail to break even and just about all of them are critically panned.

I didn't know Prince of Persia was a AAA title.
    Odd.

The film is gonna suck - its going to be critically panned i can just tell. Judging from the trailers its going to be anyway.
I mean - i'm not saying every Video-game film has to be marketed as a video-game movie, heck all video game movies hardly stay true to video-game or the franchise anyway.

Marketing it as a video-game film isn't the best way cause it doesn't always appeal - but there has to be that some sort of connection. Whilst Prince of Persia film has nailed the look/setting i guess - its just a regular action film produced by Jerrmy Bruckheimer. I actually don't understand why they have chosen Prince of Persia as its title even...

Eh, considering Red Faction isn't a AAA title and wouldn't be given a $100 million budget i wouldn't think; it may become one of those standout sci-fi action films thats too expensive to classify as indie but has that appeal to become popular.

How about they make a move out of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" instead?
Like Red Faction, Heinlein's novel involves an insurrection against Earth, although instead of being set on Mars like in the game the novel is set on the Moon. Also unlike Red Faction the novel has a plot, something I'm pretty sure is important to making a movie. Or at least a potentially good movie.
