Xbox Live Matchmaking Update For “That Australian Gamer”

Xbox Live Matchmaking Update For “That Australian Gamer”

Microsoft claims they’ve “opened up the hood on Xbox LIVE and tinkered with how matchmaking works for Modern Warfare 2.” The result should be improved matchmaking for gamers in isolated areas such as Australia.

Infinity Ward tweaked the game’s matchmaking when they issued an update alongside the Stimulus Package DLC. Now Microsoft themselves have pitched in.

A post on the Xbox Live Operations Blog says their servers now make your country an even more important factor when it comes to searching for matches.

As a gamer, you want to play in a lag-free game. This means that you need to be playing with gamers who are “near you” on the Internet. This is why games like MW2 ping potential matches to determine how close they are and reject them if they’re too far away. If you live somewhere that’s geographically isolated – like Australia, for example – most of the world is not near you. The speed of light just isn’t fast enough (that’s not something I get to say every day).

On behalf of that Australian gamer we’re now trying harder than ever to find a session in their country for them to join. Of course, this requires there to be games hosted in Australia with open slots at the moment they’re looking – but we’ve maximized the odds of those gamers getting together.

So, I’d like to ask you, as that Australian gamer, havew you noticed any improvement when playing Modern Warfare 2 over Xbox Live?

Modern Warfare 2 Matchmaking Update – The Speed of Light Edition [Xbox Live Operations Blog]

  • Yes indeed, first time i started searching i could see the ping query behaving differently (properly?)and within seconds i was in an aussie game with green connection. After several searches at different times still proved it works, with only 1 or 2 searches taking 20 odd seconds longer to find an open slot game. I’m on ADSL2+ 22mbit connection rate. A welcomed edition indeed which finally takes advantage of my internet connection.

  • Haven’t noticed anything as I can’t get to any multiplayer games. At all.

Because I’m capped by fucking Telstra on a 20gb plan for $89 per month!

    THAT’S WHY!!!

    • Try iiNet! As soon as my Telstra 12GB plan ran out i went to iiNet and get 20GB peak, 20GB off-peak and un-metered XBox Live (downloads and gaming)

      • Im on iinet as well, and love it, but just so you know, most xbox live gameplay is not unmetered. Because games like MW2, Halo, etc, run P2P, there is no way for iinet to verify it is game data. The only unmetered stuff is traffic that goes to xbox live servers. (And, obviously, all the other things mentioned in the freezone).

      • I’m with TPG for $79.95 for 200 gigs. I’m thinking of dropping to the $49.95 plan for 130 gigs but the peak and offpeak is better with my current plan.

  • This news may have me going back to live for some games to see. I love live for friends and the like but when I also have access to PC games and the abilty to se Aus servers it makes Live quite redundant.

  • As a “techie” I wonder if these changes are platform wide or specific to Modern Warfare 2 since the player base on that title is larger than less popular (read: any other) games.

The obvious downside to more emphasis on stricter geographic match making if the player base isn’t large enough are longer wait times and less players per match.

I guess these are the benefits of selling a million consoles regionally.

  • “If you live somewhere that’s geographically isolated – like Australia, for example – most of the world is not near you.”

    We’re so lonely here…

  • Surely if they can implement it for one game, they can do it for all? And why only for a game that screws aussie’s around? I mean how long did it take them to fix matchmaking?! I traded the game once i found out that all their promises of better match making for us aussies were proved bullsh*t

  • “The speed of light just isn’t fast enough (that’s not something I get to say every day).”

The speed of light is plenty fast enough. It’s all the computing equipment at each end that is not fast enough.

Perth to New York (almost polar opposites) = 18708 km

    Time taken for light to travel = 18708000 m / 299792458 m per s = 0.062 s = 62 ms (ping)

That’s plenty fast enough for any game, even if you add another 50 ms total for processing at each end. It’s a shame there’s another 400 ms or so of processing involved between the two locations.

  • Yeah but does it prevent Aussie’s from actually playing games if no other Aussie’s are available. I know thats not going to be heaps likely with everyone playing it & all…

But if no local matches can be found and if what they’ve done “rejects players too far away” then can the system then let you play with more Yanks if no Aussie matches can be found?

  • There has been an improvment since the update, but ive been having alot more drop-outs. I probably get booted from 1 in 3 matches, where before the patch this rarely happened.

Is anyone else finding the same?

  • Yeah I gave up XBL a long time ago. Its absolutely hopeless for aussies. I like the idea of it but it really doesnt work for aussies in its current state.

    PC gaming ftw!

  • Yes we have only played Australian matches since the update. The only problem is that the Australians are lot better/harder to play.

I really did find it more fun wacking Americans. And a lot easier. For some reason.

I’d prefer an option to choose local matches or not. I never had problems before the update so was happy with the previous matchmaking. And it added a bit more flavor having lots of different nationalities. Now we only get the random sheep shaggers joining in with the Aussies.

Does anyone know why Americans are not very good at it? Or is it just a lot of young kids playing that don’t have 20+ years of gaming experience.

    • I found that too, around the time the title update and I started hitting Australian lobbies. They’re generally better at the game, communicative (in a good way) and have better situational awareness.

I’ve got a couple of mates who are in the States that I play with occassionally and when I join up with them, the American lobbies are just horrid. So much racism and ridiculous trash talking, random screaming into microphones. They’re mostly retarded and frustrating, and it’s a relief to get back to the calmer Aussie matches.

      • Its called LAG, Latency, laggy people are harder to hit in general.

So now your latency has evened out with fellow aussies. therefore, its not because americans were too shit or aussies are better at the game.

its because you had advantage before, and now theres no advantage.

  • What gametype are Aussies playing?

I normally play Mercenary Team Death Match, and I’ll be buggered if I see many Aussies.

    • They used to fill the Mosh Pit consistently, and it used to be the only place you could rely on nearly green games all night. But since the title updates the only Americans I see lag horrendously 😀

  • It’s an absolutely BRILLIANT update. I used to always have red connection, but since the update, I’ve been connected to all aussies, in seconds, with FULL connection! Now THATS an update!
