Your Guide To Xbox 360 USB Drives

Now that you can use a standard USB flash or hard drive with your Xbox 360, it's time to figure out which is the best to use.

Fortunately, Rooster Teeth's Achievement Hunters rounded up a bunch of drives to test out how quickly they allow you to install games on them and if they impact gameplay.

What they discovered is that while the time it takes to install Borderlands can vary greatly, the actually gameplay experience was about the same on everything they tested.

But still, you don't want to sit around waiting 20 minutes for Borderlands to install on your flashdrive when you can wait just five, right? Then check out their results, or watch the video.

Here's the full rundown Xbox HD: 5 minutes, 25 seconds Sandisk flashdrive: 16 minutes, 10 seconds Sandisk Cruzer: 21 minutes, 58 seconds PNY 16: 8 minutes, 38 seconds PNY 4 Mini: Not compatible External Seagate HD: 5 minutes, 25 seconds Lacie 2T external HD: 5 minutes, 29 seconds

No wonder they limit the storage to 32GB - it appears that the external USB hard drives are as fast as the internal drive at some tasks. Who would buy a 250GB Xbox HD if you could get by on a 60-120GB and an external drive for all your other stuff?

It's only really the install game feature which eats disk, which play fine from DVD if you prefer. I only install games I play regularly or for the duration of my first couple of campaign playthroughs.

      16GB wasn't it?? Not 32?

I will just say for anyone reading this that there is a 8gb flash drive for $21 at Woolworths but Don't be tempted as I did... failed data loss test!

I thought it was too good to be true. Anything else out there of similar size (or more) and price as basically I am a major tight [email protected]#$.

Thanks for the info Fatshady, I was totally thinking about buying that cheap drive

I would more like to see a list of compatible USB flash drives.

MS should update their site with USBs they are aware work or if that is too hard, USBs that don't work.
Then again - their excuse would be "just buy OUR USB" but then they don't have a custom made MS Router and they list compatible routers for XBL.

I'll keep asking this - but can you partition a portable HDD into 16GB installments and use that? I have a full HDD and can't store all the crap on their anywhere and therefore can't test it myself.

Partitions dont work... It just removes them and makes the whole drive 1 16gb partition. I know this because i formatted mine into 2 15gb partitions but the xbox made it 1 16 gb
