A Very Special Episode Of Japanese Console Sales

After a bit of a shake up in Japan’s weekly hardware contest, things return to “normal”, with the PSP and PlayStation 3 sitting atop the charts, Nintendo proudly taking the middle and one platform veering closer to obscurity.

This is the first week that the PSPgo managed to sell less than a thousand units in Japan, according to sale tracker Media Create’s numbers. That can’t be good. Admittedly, it’s a slow week across the board, but maybe a price drop is needed to keep this platform – which accounts for a wee 3.4 per cent of all PSP sales this week – from falling even lower.

For the week of May 10 to May 16, here’s how the console war in Japan went down.

  • PSP – 24,475
  • PlayStation 3 – 20,463
  • Wii – 17,570
  • Nintendo DSi LL – 15,879
  • Nintendo DSi – 9990
  • Xbox 360 – 4370
  • Nintendo DS Lite – 2695
  • PlayStation 2 – 1293
  • PSPgo – 871

  • Just as interesting, is the fact that x360 still only sold 5x as much as Gos. And 3.37x PS2s.

Xbox is such a little trooper…
