First LittleBigPlanet 2 Details: It's A Whole New Game

PlayStation 3 do-it-yourself platformer LittleBigPlanet is getting a sequel, a fact confirmed by the latest issue of Game Informer magazine, which spills a sackful of new and fascinating details on developer Media Molecule's next game.

According to early details from the magazine from a NeoGAF forum member, LittleBigPlanet 2 is much more than just a side-scrolling platforming game. Media Molecule is creating new tools that will enable players to create racing games, puzzle games, "Space Invaders clones", role-playing games and even real-time strategy games.

"A Media Molecule developer has created a fully-functioning Command & Conquer clone," according to a recount of the mag's report.

LittleBigPlanet 2 will also apparently let players create and edit short films, record their own sound effects and manipulate the game's camera to make customised cut scenes using Sackboys.

The PS3 game also introduces the Sackbot, a fully customisable and programmable enemy unit. With new "direct control seat" options that let players define control schemes, creating customised controls for enemies, vehicles and even Sackboy himself - no more standardised floaty control? - LittleBigPlanet 2's game creation tools sound like a massive leap.

    Wow, sounds too good to be true. And we all know how that works out.

    Hving said that, Media Molecule do have the (limited) pedigree and seemingly the ability to pull it off.

    I'm sold. I picked up LittleBigPlanet and I enjoyed it, but I never found myself going back to it. The new types of gameplay in the second one should give me more incentive to play it again, I just hope that the levels from LBP can be imported or played in the sequel.

    But what about ModNation Racers! I joke. This game is sounding to be fantastic, can't wait to hear more!

    Well if the soundtrack's as good as the first LBP then it'll definitely be a must-buy.

    If it isnt drastically different in terms of the interface, gameplay etc, it wont be a sale for me.

    The idea of LBP was that the dev's just continue adding stuff into the game - water, guns etc.

    So why a totally new game?
    What cant they do in LBP that they can in LBP2?
    And what about our content we've got in LBP, transferable?

      It sounds completely different to the first game. The first game was essentially just a platformer (an excellent one!) that allowed you to create your own levels. The new one sounds like a lot more than just a platformer. Besides, it's not like media molecule are pumping out a new game every year like Activision does with Call of Duty. At least you get 2+ years of playtime and support before the new one comes out.

    Watch them delete 90% of the levels made because they are homages to other games.

    If the first LBP proved anything, it's that the average user is not a game designer. Almost every custom level I played was absolutely terrible, and even the rating system did nothing to help filter through the crap.

    Not dissing the game - I loved LBP - but the user made levels were the absolute worst part of that game, and that includes the iffy jumping.

    Even if the custom levels turn out crap... Still REALLY want this. Played it nonstop for weeks, before I even bothered going online. Whatever Media Molecule makes for it themselves will be enough for me, good custom levels a bonus.

    they should really make a pc program to edit levels, it takes forever to do it on the console and i would much prefer downloadable software where we can edit on the pc which ties to our account, then on the console be able to download it onto our harddrive or something

    I hope its in some sort of coherent storyline or mechanic, like the first was all based around platforming, but if its just a minigame fest then no-buy

    Let's think about this for a moment, someone can make their own RTS game.

    Sure it's a MM Dev and he's knows the tools back to front, but even if it takes "average joe" a year to make something that complex, that's still 1 person creating a complete game.

    A game that when it was first made probably took a couple of years and many many people to make. For MM to create a set of tools that allows "average joe" to do this is a remarkable achievement.

    I thought the tools in LBP were pretty cool, but these rumours of LBP2 make those same tools in LBP seem very basic indeed.
