Ratchet & Clank Maker's Next Game Coming To The Xbox 360, PS3

The next big gaming franchise from the creators of a decade and a half's worth of some of the Playstation's most beloved titles is coming to the Xbox 360.

Insomniac Games, the studio behind Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank and Resistance, unveiled a deal this morning with Electronic Arts that will put their still unannounced, undated next franchise on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360. Under the agreement Insomniac will retain ownership of the intellectual property.

"There have been a lot of great reasons to make games for the Playstation," said Ted Price, founder and CEO of Insomniac Games. "We have a wonderful relationship with Sony and will continue to work with them on Playstation titles."

While Insomniac Games' growth as a developer has been steady, it hasn't seen any big spikes, Price told Kotaku. Making a game for multiple systems means that the developer and its games will be able to reach a broader audience.

"We never wanted to limit ourselves," Price said. "People are inspired here by having the opportunity to try new things. (Playstation 3 shooter) Resistance was a chance to branch out and we will continue to look for those opportunities."

The latest chance is bringing Insomniac Games' upcoming, all-new franchise set in a new universe to the PS3 and Xbox 360. The title is currently in production at the company's Burbank studio, but Price remained tight-lipped about what it was.

"We've never approached any of the games we make as one-offs," Price said. "Our goal is to create a franchise."

Price declined to specify the sort of game it would be, adding that the developer won't be talking about it at this year's E3 next month.

He did say that Insomniac currently has "multiple teams working on multiple projects."

We've heard that Insomniac Games has agreed to produce at least one more Ratchet & Clank title and perhaps two more Resistance games. Price declined to confirm those details, but did verify that his company is still working on both franchises.

"We are going to continue to support Ratchet and Resistance," he said. "I think (PS3 owners) will be happy with what we have coming."

Rumours of Insomniac breaking their 16-year tradition of creating games exclusively for the Playstation first surfaced during the Game Developers Conference earlier this year. Craig Rechenmacher, vice president of marketing at EA Partners, said the discussions with Insomniac started "pretty organically."

"We have relationships with everyone," Rechenmacher said. "This is one we've had our eyes on forever."

"Our goal is to work with the best and brightest game developers"

There wouldn't be a problem with r&c coming to 360. heaps of people got the ps3 for ps3 exclusive but just a couple of the exclusives came over to 360 anyways and they didnt turn out so bad. more of a chance for the company to make money.

Was always gonna happen and power to them

the extra money can only mean more quality titles

The R&C games are awesome as was resistance 1 its a shame they kinda $#%$ed up Resistance 2

dont get me wrong its a great game but compared to the first it was kinda a let down where the original had a level of well yeah this could be realistic like the way the second one went it felt like theyd merged it with R&C a bit

So now the only reason to own a PS3 is killzone3 (but lets face it killzone 1 sucked before so why did sony give us more) and GT5?...

So the only reason to own an Xbox360 is Halo?

I called this ages ago, Sony fanboys will not be pleased. But Insomniac is a 3rd party developer, to deny them multiplatform abilities purely because they always just developed for one platform is craziness not only from a business standpoint, but from a gamers perspective also.

As long as it doesn't take away from the PS3 versions of these games, more power to them. But the newest R&C was absolutely beautiful (it was like playing a Pixar movie, but with explosions!), and I'll be disappointed if it takes a step back so they can focus on the 360.

Sony said right at the outset of this generation that they would not throw money around to make/keep 3rd party exclusives or to sway Sony-exclusive 3rd party developers to remain so.

They'd rather spend the money on developing more in house stuff at a lower premium, rather than try to compensate someone like Square-Enix to remain Sony exclusive.

This is just the next logical step.

Ratchet and Clank will not come to 360 or to any other platform. While Insomniac makes the games, Sony publishes them. And they have the rights to them. The good thing is that Sony have a good relationship with the team, so they may not make Ratchet games behinf their back. At least I hope so. Possibly, they'll lean on Ready at Dawn or High Impact Games to make another PSP Ratchet.

This new deal is a boon for 360 owners, who are seriously lacking in good platformers. So I hope that Insomniac can deliver on that, but it doesn't mean that the PS3 will go without either.

And lastly, Insomniac was approached by Sony several times to be purchased. Insomniac likes the freedom of independence. So it's unlikely you'll see them purchased by EA or MS or anyone anytime soon.

FINALLY. One of my two favourite franchises are Spyro (original trilogy) and Ratchet & Clank. I know they won't come to 360, but they are such a great developer and I'm looking forward to what brilliant new IP they can bring to the 360.

While it's a little sad that I can't gloat about their exclusive awesomeness anymore, Insomniac deserve all the extra love and attention that they will no doubt now receive. They really are such an awesome studio. I just hope that they don't forget all those poor old playstation owners who helped make them. With any luck they keep throwing exclusives our way and make the ps3 their lead platform.

ya know, i saw the image while searching for ratchet and clank images. strikes me kinda odd that most of the comments I've read want this game on the 360, and id be fine with it, if i didn't always hear from my friends and on online PC games and on the internet in general, that an i am going to put it how they always say it "PS3 HAZ NOE GAEMS" hmm seems rather odd to me. Apparently it does have games xbox players want >.>
