Snakes, Slimes & Super Mario Still Japan’s Favourite Things

As it has for the past two weeks, Square Enix’s latest Dragon Quest spin-off has slimed its way to the top of Japan’s video game charts. This week, it becomes the latest Nintendo DS game to sell a million units.

Similarly, portable stealth action game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker spends its third week in second place, still a steady stream of Snakes making their way into the hands of Japanese gamers. The rest of the top ten is mostly Wii and PlayStation 3 games, with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Nier Replicant and Super Street Fighter IV representing each platform.

Don’t expect to see too many new faces in this relatively slow week, but keep an eye peeled for the debuts of Metro 2033 and FIFA 2010’s World Cup game.

  • I got the first DQM game last week, and it’s awesome. I’ve already clocked in about 11 hours in the story mode, but I really haven’t progressed that far. The games monster synthesis mechanic means that you need to constantly grind the same enemies in the same areas. You need to build up a monster, mix it with another built up monster, then build up that monster, and then repeat. It’s a really fun game, everything looked familiar because I have the Dragon Quest on PS2, but with a lack of side quests and not much else to do outside of the monster collecting and mixing, the grind is sometimes too much.
