Sony Making A Movie Out Of…Rollercoaster Tycoon

There are currently plans to make movies based on World of Warcraft, Gears of War and BioShock. Those all make sense. But a new deal that hopes to make a film out of family strategy game Rollercoaster Tycoon? Um…

Sony Pictures Animation has picked up the rights to the game, which was published by Atari and has been quite the hit amongst more casual gamers.

It’ll be a combination of live-action and animation, will be written by David Ronn and Jay Scherick (The Zookeeper), with Atari’s Jim Wilson an executive producer and Harald Zwart – the man behind the Karate Kid remake – hoping to direct.

  • Actually, I didn’t mind the old Rollercoaster games. I gave it in though after spending forever building a massive high rollercoaster track from the top of a mountain, which toured the whole park. Only to find the chicken arsed plebs were too damn scared to use the damn thing. Grrrr.

This makes me want to go hunt for my RC3 disc, its somewheres abouts…

  • Seeing as everyone is on a 3D kick right now, it seems logical to make a movie that actually puts you on a rollercoaster. Wouldn’t it be funny if they edited in footage of the rollercoaster crash from final destination 3 into this film?

But seriously, I’ll bet $10 that this is just 80 mins of old school “things pop out at you” 3D

  • So it’s a movie about a man designing and building the ultimate Rollercoaster? Sounds boring but you know you just have to see any movie that’s in 3D.

  • What is this I don’t even…

How can they hope to pull any sort of plot out of a game from the Tycoon series? And then expect people to enjoy the inevitable rubbish that streams forth?

I generally don’t watch video game -> movie adaptations, as they usually don’t do justice to the source material (re: Hitman, Max Payne, anything by Uwe Boll, etc), and that’s for games with *good* plots… I don’t see them making any dosh from this idea.

Still, if some idiots think they can make a movie out of Pong or Space Invaders, I can see why Sony would want to jump on the bandwagon. Though I don’t see a Pong or Space Invaders movie relating to the games in anything but name…

  • Man i LOVED the RCT games. When i was 14-15 it was all i played on the weekends! Couldnt get enough.

Wish Chris Sawyer would make another one.

  • This is Hollywood right?
They’ll make the builder on a secret mission to expose some secret organisation; or some millionaire kid is looking for some fun but it constantly surrounded by security, security gates/defence systems most of the time, and some very-small-time criminal group decides the most exposed/weakest place would be at a themepark; so they make the rollercoaster and fail hard time and time again to steal the kid.

Imaging Home Alone, but in rollercoasters. 3D so you feel you’re there.

Or some poor guy whose been given a plot of land and must satisfy his father’s dying wish of the best rollercoaster themepark ever in order for the guy to inherit the rest of his estate.

    And zombies start sprouting.
