These Schoolgirl Songs Are Popular

For an anime about schoolgirl rockers, one thing is more important than all others: the music. And animated series K-On! has just that, good music.

Well, if you can stomach saccharine anime pop. (Doesn't bother me!)

The show's season season opening tune "Go! Go! Maniac" hit number one in the Japanese music charts, selling over 83,000 copies. And coming in the number 2 spot is K-On!'s ending theme "Listen!!", which sold 77,000 copies.

This is the first number one album by anime characters. Previously K-On! tunes, season one opening theme "Cagayake!GIRLS" and ending them "Don't Say 'Lazy', charted at number 4 and number 2 on the Japanese charts.

As website Tokyograph points out, the last female singer to achieve the top two singles in the same week was "eternal idol" Seiko Matsuda in 1983. Matsuda, who is viewed as a national treasure of cute in Japan, is perhaps best known to Western audiences for her duet "The Right Combination" with New Kids on the Block singer Donnie Wahlberg.

As with most popular anime and manga, K-On! are getting the inevitable video game adaptation.

    Not K-on, Kotaku. Please. It's easily the worst show of the last year.

      @Crab

      I beg to differ, K-On was probably one of the highlights of 2009's offerings in my opinion.

        The rock music took a back seat to all the cake and complaining about their lady parts though :S

          You make that sound like a bad thing

    Well... that first video gave me some kind of stoke, blind in left eye, walk with a limp, very tragic, will sue.

    I have to ask, what's the charm here? It's about as appealing as listening to an alvin and the chip monks album. At least the chipmunks don't aspire to an audience old enough to have stopped eating dirt.

      Since I'm assuming you can't understand the (pretty horrible) lyrics, listen past it and there's some pretty solid rock n roll in there.

      Also, K-On is one of the least bad anime of last year. At least the characters were likable.

    Trigun has the best opening theme or any anime.

      "Trigun has the best opening theme for any anime."

      ^ ^ ^ That.
