What Is The Nintendo 3DS’s Final Name?

The Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo’s upcoming glasses-free 3D gaming handheld, does not yet have a finalised name. The “Nintendo 3DS” is a temporary moniker for the portable. So what will it ever be called?

At a recent financial briefing, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was asked about the 3DS name – whether or not Nintendo will stick with it or when it when get a new name. “Since we’ve stated that it will go on sale during the present term,” Iwata replied, “I think the formal name will be made public in the not so distant future.”

Nintendo previously stated that the entirely new handheld console will go on sale between April 2010 and March 2011 (a.k.a. this financial year). Nintendo will be unveiling the new hardware for the first time at the E3 gaming expo in Los Angeles. It is assumed that the portable will get its finalised name then.

E3 is a long ways away – June! Hit up the comments with your best guess as to what Nintendo is going to call this 3D gaming console.

  • I dont think you can top the ‘3DS’? Unless it is “Super Mega Happy Funtime Console for Make Possible Home Gaming’- or SMHFCMPHG for short.

  • So I clicked through the RSS feed to get the answer of “No name has been announced yet.”

    Thanks Kotaku!

  • Well if it looks like the DS – then keep 3DS – if not and they actually use their brains to design something new and fresh, then change the name.

Hopefully the latter. They can still have ‘Dual-Screens’ with 3D gaming and NOT make it like the DS.

But then, i wouldn’t care if Natal was chosen as the final name for Project Natal – it has stuck so far, so why not keep what everyone calls it by.
