Australia Gets Its Own Indie Games Awards

More encouragement for indie games designers today as Freeplay, the annual independent games festival held in Melbourne, will this year be honouring the best in local indie game development with the Freeplay Awards.

The Freeplay Independent Games Festival takes place on August 14 and 15 at the State Library of Victoria. This year is the first time there’ll be an awards ceremony.

There are eight categories: Best Game, Best Design in a Game, Best On-Paper Design, Best Art in a Game, Best Concept Art, Best Technical Innovation, Best Game Writing and Best Audio.

“We’re very excited to be celebrating indie creativity with these awards,” says Eve Penford Dennis, co-director of the Freeplay Independent Games Festival.

“There’s been a lot of interest in the indie games scene in Melbourne especially, and there are many developers finding success with their indie projects. With these awards, we can acknowledge their hard work and creativity.

“Furthermore, we can encourage developers and artists who are not currently involved in larger game projects, and those people who are at the prototyping stage.”

Indie designers have got until 11.59pm July 19 to submit their entries for all the categories. The winners will be announced at Freeplay on August 15.
