Mass Effect Devs Looking For A Multiplayer Programmer

A job listing reveals that Mass Effect developer BioWare Montreal is looking for a multiplayer programmer to "take existing single player user experiences and make them multiplayer safe". Is Mass Effect going multiplayer?

While the job listing, posted on EA's job site, doesn't come right out and say the position they are hiring for will be working on a multiplayer Mass Effect, it certainly hints big, from the introductory paragraph...

Multiplayer Programmers ensure the game engine and game systems work reliably and efficiently in a multiplayer environment. They work with both the front and back ends to take existing single player user experiences and make them multiplayer safe.

Like I said, it's no confirmation, but then what else is BioWare working on that would require a multiplayer programmer? Right now they've got Dragon Age, Star Wars: The Old Republic and Mass Effect, and the job posting singles out Mass Effect.

We've reached out to BioWare for comment on the job listing and will update should we receive a response.

Update: BioWare's response: "Mass Effect is a rich, dynamic fiction designed as a trilogy. The team at BioWare is working on new downloadable content for Mass Effect 2 and are in the early stages of Mass Effect 3 development."

Well that certainly does nothing to clear that up!

    Come ooooooooon Mass Effect co-op!

    Go on BioWare you haven't completely stuffed up the franchise yet. MP would be the icing that would do that for you.

    Maybe they're going back to Pinacle Station with the next DLC... and so versus combat might work.

    The changes to ME2 do make it more multiplayer shooter friendly... but yeah I'm not keen on this idea.

    However, Mass Effect is what they're known best for, it could be something new and they're just going for brand association. Although, if they're doing that... wouldn't they want more than one person?

      Multiplayer doesn't necessarily mean typical round-based versus matches. They could do some really nice things with simple drop-in/drop-out co-op like the LEGO series and Fable II did.
      Gears of War does some interesting things with co-op too. The sections where you take the high road and your partner (or the AI) takes the low road could translate over to Mass Effect very smoothly.

        I Was talking to a friend about this a few days ago and totally agree. We decided the best mechanic for ME2 would be for the drop in to have control of the two squad members and just switch between depending on the situation. All story and pause is controlled by the host but the drop in can 'ghost' a selection or call for a time-out (pause). Still have the squad members teleport to Shep when they fall too far behind.

        Another option for pausing could be a time-out timer. Both players can fire off a time-out (pause) but unlike normal play these are maybe three to four seconds long before play resumes, then the time-out needs to recharge like your shield.

        Of course all this is wishful thinking. I expect net-code and how to resolve lag will form the bulk of this job.
