New Sonic Kinect Game Seems Familiar

The newest Sonic game will let you use your body to control a hover-boarding Sonic. It's Xbox Kinectic only, but may ring a bell.

Clearly utilising the design of the 2006 Sonic Riders game that appeared on GameCube, Xbox and PlayStation, Sonic Free Riders lets players play as their Avatar or as one of the Sonic family of characters, racing through courses as swiftly as possible. This one requires the full-body, no-controller game control offered by the Xbox 360 Kinect.

The press release describes the controls: "Choosing from one of your favourite Sonic characters, or your own Avatar, you can reach out and grab a variety of pickups along the course. By throwing, shaking or swinging your arms to launch your items, you can gain the competitive edge over your rivals in high octane single or multiplayer races."

The game will support board and bike customisation, includes on-track pick-ups and weapons, such as bowling balls, traps and rockets.

Announced characters include Sonic, Tails and Dr Eggman.

No screenshots or video yet. The game is one of 15 Kinect launch titles.

It will be interesting to see if these titles remain Kinect-only.
On one hand, they need to be to force people to pick up the peripheral, on the other hand, it will limit their market massively if they don't have controller support, or if the Kinect support isn't near perfect. I would be annoyed if it was a game I really liked, but I had to drive it via Kinect if I wanted a late-night gaming session on the couch. Even if I preferred to play via Kinect when gaming with the family, I think I'd prefer controller support when on my own. Like guitar-hero, I play that standing up with friends, but play sitting back on the couch if I play at night or on my own.

Hmmm... now I just sound sad and lonely.

I'm curious about this one, I'll also bet that Knuckles, Shadow and Amy are also in this.
