That Mortal Kombat Trailer? Jeri Ryan Explains

Actress Jeri Ryan of Star Trek: Voyage fame appears as Sonya Blade in a Mortal Kombat trailer dubbed "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" that popped up online. Is it a game trailer? A movie trailer? Tell us, Jeri, tell us!

"Okay, so... Mortal Kombat," she tweets. "It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film."

Ryan said she did her role as a favour to a friend. "No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was," she adds. I can tell you what my reaction was: stoked.

While a Mortal Kombat film was directed by Paul W.S. Anderson (of Resident Evil movie fame) in 1995, an updated take on the franchise has been languishing in development hell. However, a lawsuit has been filed by the development partner of the original film as it signed a contract in 2006 to do a sequel.

The Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short was helmed by Kevin Tancharoen. He directed last year's Fame remake.

Sorry Jeri, but Bridgette Wilson is the only Sonya Blade for me.

I think I just vomitted in my mouth a little bit.

Mrs Sampras was as good a Sonya Blade as Halle Berry was... well EITHER Storm OR Catwoman.

Seven of Nine Mortal Kombat fans prefer Jeri Ryan...

How could you post that picture without the NSFW tag in the title?

This still to me smells of a mislead and big reveal at E3.

Even if Outland(s?) is not in it, I would pay good money to see this. That promo was just amazing.

That is one hell of a leap though, Fame to this. Made me laugh a bit.

I was actually impressed with the Mortal Kombat video. The two previous MK films have been intentionally camp. They knew they were video game films and didn’t take themselves too seriously, or try too hard to actually be a good movie, particularly the second film that almost descended into self-parody.

If a third MK film was ever going to happen, right now is the best time. Now that WB has the rights to MK, I’m assuming they will also reboot the game series as well. They could have this movie release at the same time. I think the MK name still has the opportunity to be a profitable one. It just needs to start from the beginning and not let the series stagnate like it did for the last 5 years.

Interesting, Kevin Tancharoen is the brother of Maurissa Tancharoen - of Dr. Horrible / Dollhouse fame...

Man, I can totally see her huge left nipple in that shot.

    *voyager, not voyage

Star Trek: voyage? I think not!

the trailer looks good and all, definitely better than the older ones...

but am i the only one that thinks it feels too....American??

I duno, I can't find another way to describe it. It's just very American.

This may come as a suprise to you, but Mortal Kombat was created by an American company and originally made for an American market, and a fair chunk of the Earthrealm sequences were set in America, etc. etc.

Besides, I really didn't get that vibe nor understand what you mean by it. The only thing I can think of is that it's set in an American city.

    She is no Sonya Blade.

First Mortal Kombat film was actually quite well done considering they were mostly trying to stick to the established story.
    Second was rubbish.

This looks like it could be awesome though. So long as they don't try to stick in any elements that don't fit I reckon they could actually make a decent video game movie.
