Fable III Going Episodic, Downloadable

Fable II's episodic experiment seems to have been a success, because Lionhead and Microsoft will be doing the same thing with upcoming Xbox RPG Fable III, releasing the game in downloadable chapters over Xbox Live.

It won't replace the retail version, of course, as it'll be shipping shortly afterwards. But it'll be a nice complement to people who are on the fence about spending $US50-60 up-front on the game.

"Soon after the retail launch we're doing episodic," series creator Peter Molyneux told GI.biz. "We break it down in chapters. We give away the first chapter entirely free, the first hour. When you reach a certain point in the game it says 'thank you for playing the pilot of Fable 3, do you want to spend an extra 2-5 or whatever dollars to buy the next episode, or buy the whole lot?' Press 'yes' and you will immediately continue playing."

Wait, passing over the standard Molyneux = crazy jokes. Did he just say that he's going to release the game in a standard retail version and then release it in episodes, which have a limited play value if you only buy the first one?

Sure I can see a plus, if you want to see if you like the game then by the pilot, but what happens if the second ep has a new cast? What if they get rid of my favourite character because the focus groups didn't like him? Are they going to change the theme song? Say it isn't so!!

I don't get what you're saying. It's exactly the same as retail, but split up.

Welcome to the internet. I present to you, sarcastic humor.

I don't think you get what's happening. It's the full retail version split into individual episodes so you can play segments at a time.

Very good idea. I'm hoping they release Alan Wake again this way too, the way it's chapters were done, it's screaming for it!

Any indication of file size per episode?

They could just call a demo and you then buy the game through Games on Demand...
